One of the carnival workers wearing a clown mask came through the employee gate carrying an armful of costumes.
Black fabric.
Gloves.
Masks.
I almost looked away.
Until one slipped from the pile.
It hit the ground.
My heart stopped.
I knew that mask.
It looked a lot different not covering the face I’ve been thinking about all night.
The worker bent to pick it up, but Sebastian beat him to it.
He grabbed it from the pavement.
My stomach flipped.
No fucking way.
He held it up, said something to the worker, then-
“Here.”
Sullivan caught it when it was tossed to him.
I stared.
The mask rested in his hand.
The same bone mask Id stared at in the mirror maze.
The same mask that had hovered above me inside the farmhouse.
His brother reached into the pile.
And pulled out another one.
Identical.
My stomach dropped.
All the way down.
No.
I looked at the mask in his hand.
Then the one in Sullivan’s.
Back and forth.
