I stared at her instead of answering her question. Because I needed her to answer mine instead. “Why didn’t you tell me Jacob hated jelly?”

“Why didn’t you know that?” she countered.

“Well I remember now.” I couldn’t picture a time that Jacob had ever eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. But I’d panicked and was in a hurry.

“Are you and Jacob pretending to date now?” RJ asked.

Liam shook his head. “Obviously, bro. Why did you call them out like that?”

“Because no one told me what was going on. All I know is that Adonis is Soph’s mystery man. I thought you guys all hated him. But you invited him over, so I figured everything was good. And he’s awesome.”

“He is awesome,” Scarlett said.

Axel lowered his eyebrows. “He’s okay.”

“Thank you, Axel,” I said. “I think we should stop hanging out with him.”

“But you’re doing a group project together,” Scarlett said.

“You take him.”

“Definitely not,” Axel said. He gave me a look.

Which I knew meant I needed to stop pushing this. Axel did not like the way Scarlett kept talking about Adonis being good looking. And I wasn’t going to put their relationship in jeopardy.

I sighed. “Fine. But no more hanging out with him like this.”

“Um...does that include lunch?” RJ asked. “Because I already told him he could sit with us.”

“RJ!”

“What? He’s gonna be my teammate...”

“He’s a cocky, flirtatious, idiot.”

“I know,” RJ said. “He’s cool.”

Liam laughed.

“Don’t encourage him,” I said.

Liam shrugged. “He is gonna be our teammate, Soph. And he’s new to school. And he’s a nice guy.”

“He’s not a nice guy. He’s a very bad boy.”

“Just your type,” Scarlett said.

“I don’t like bad boys.”

“You liked a very bad teacher.”

“Mr. Halifax wasn’t a bad teacher. He was amazing.”

“He slept with a student,” Liam said. “That kinda makes him a bad teacher.”

“And then left the state because he’s an asshole,” RJ said. “Adonis is way nicer than Mr. Halifax.”

“You’re all a bunch of traitors. What happened to being worried he was a kidnapping blackmailer?”
