“Hey, Aphrodite. Your brother gave me your number. I hope that’s okay.”
Gah! RJ!
My phone buzzed again. “Now delete that app. You don’t need to be on that thing anymore.”
I quickly typed back. “Yes, I do. How else will I find my next hookup?”
“You’ll call me.”
“No.”
“Wanna bet?”
I swallowed hard. I didn’t want to make the bet. Because I was worried I’d lose.
“That’s what I thought,” he texted.
I rolled my eyes.
“Now tell me where your head went when we were talking. Were you thinking about him?”
I didn’t respond to this text either. I wasn’t talking to Adonis about this. It was none of his business. And all he did was judge me. Mr. Halifax wasn’t a mistake. Talking to Adonis was.
“I have an idea that might help,” Adonis texted. “Do you trust me, Aphrodite?”
I didn’t trust him in the slightest. “No,” I responded.
“You will soon.”
“Doubtful,” I texted.
“It’s hard to believe that when you wouldn’t take my bet. And don’t worry, I’ll wait. Have a good weekend, Aphrodite. Tell your parents I said hi.”
This guy was so weird.
RJ climbed into the car with a smile on his face.
“Did you seriously give Adonis my number?” I asked. “I specifically said I didn’t want him to have it.”
“No, you didn’t. When he asked all you said was he needed to stop inviting himself over to our place. You never actually said no about the phone number.”
“It was an all-around no!”
“Well, that was very unclear.” He smiled, even though he definitely knew I didn’t want this.
“You knew what I meant. Why did you give him my number?”
He tapped one of his thumbs on the steering wheel as he thought it over. “Because you’re sad all the time. And you’re not sad around him.”
“He does not make me happy,” I said.
“I didn’t say that he did. He actually seems to piss you off a lot. But anything is better than seeing you cry, Soph.”
I started blinking fast.
“Come on, we have a movie to watch.” He pulled the car out of its spot. He was getting a lot better at driving.
“You don’t have to stay in just because I am.”
