I push him back toward the passenger seat and peek out the rear window.
Roman is still standing in the doorway. Black T-shirt. Gray sweatpants. Bare feet.
Oh, that's unfair.
I've never seen Casual-at-Home Roman.
Apparently, he’s trying to kill me.
Beck says something. Roman moves aside, and Beck disappears into the house. The door closes.
I sit up.
My smile grows. “Found you.”
Alibi wags his tail.
“I knew I could do it.”
Technically, Beck did it.
But that counts.
I grab my phone. My thumb hovers over Roman's name.
I could text him. Nice sweatpants.
No. Too easy.
I could take a picture of his house.
Also too easy.
I could simply go home, secure in the knowledge that I've finally beaten him.
I look at the house. Then at Alibi. Then back at the house.
“Who am I kidding?”
I pull off my wig and large sunglasses. Then I use the rearview mirror to fluff my hair, reapply my lip gloss, and check my teeth for anything.
Good enough.
“You stay here.”
Alibi tries to follow as soon as I open my door.
“No.”
He stares at me.
“You're too recognizable.”
His tail stops.
“That wasn't an insult.”
He continues staring.
