Mercer moves. Fast.
His hand goes for the gun.
I fire.
The shot cracks through the woods.
Mercer jerks.
His weapon hits the ground. He drops to one knee.
Callie flinches against me. But she doesn't pull away.
Mercer looks down at the blood spreading across his shoulder. Then at me. “You fucking—”
He reaches for the gun.
I fire again.
His body hits the dirt.
Silence.
Birds explode from the trees overhead.
Callie's breathing is loud beside me.
Bishop doesn't move.
Neither do I.
Mercer groans.
He’s alive. Barely conscious.
Bishop moves toward him, his gun trained on Mercer.
I release Callie and move forward.
Her hand catches mine.
I stop.
She's staring at Mercer.
Then at me.
For the first time since I found her, something uncertain flickers across her face.
This is it.
The moment she realizes.
The moment she looks at me and sees what everyone else does.
