I run a hand through my hair to keep from punching something.
“So, while I was in town...” His voice is casual, which means he’s about to drop a bombshell.
I wait impatiently, trying not to show how much I want to hear whatever he has to say.
Beck drops onto the small couch, taking up most of it.
Just tell me, motherfucker.
“Maybe I shouldn’t tell you.”
It must be about Callie. It has to be.
I stare at him.
He gives me a smug grin.
Motherfucker must want to die tonight.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
He crosses one ankle over the other. “Just wondering when you’re going to ask if I’ve seen Callie again?”
My pulse accelerates.
I feel like I’m about to break my molars from how hard I’m clenching my jaw, trying not to ask.
“I’m not asking.”
He shrugs. “Okay. Have it your way.”
“Motherfucker.” My hands clench into fists. “Tell me.”
“Heard she’s been asking about you.”
“What?” My pulse thunders in my ears.
“Course, you know how small towns are. That could just be a rumor.”
I scrutinize him. “Fucking asshole.”
“You think she’s looking for you?”
“No.”
“You sound disappointed.”
“I’m not.”
“You fucked her, then disappeared while she was asleep.”
Regret slams through me, but I hide it. “She’ll get over it.”
“Maybe she already has.”
My gaze snaps to his. Beck’s mouth slowly curls.
Fuck.
