The Curse of Heartbreak

by Amy Sumida

By the time I reached the bar, Sinclair had Hannah and Sabrina laughing again. Hannah did so flirtatiously, her hand resting on his arm. Sinclair's smile was warm and charming, but I could see the hunger lurking there.

“Hananh,” I said brightly. “Mom was looking for you. Something about family photos.”

Hannah blinked, as if coming out of a daze. “Oh. Right. I should go find her.” She glanced at Sinclair. “It was nice meeting you.”

“The pleasure was mine.” Sinclair's voice was smooth as silk.

Hannah walked away, and I turned to face Sinclair with my arms crossed.

“Really?” I said.

He had the grace to look sheepish. “I wasn't going to do anything. Just a little harmless flirtation.”

“She's my cousin.”

“You don't seem concerned about the Curses who were dancing with her earlier.”

“Because they are looking for something real while you tossed the garter away like it was a bug. Why did you do that?”

Sinclair blinked. “I don't want to get married.”

“So you don't want to find love with someone who might make your Curse happy?”

“Darling, I find love every week. I'm probably the only Curse in existence who enjoys his existence.” He grinned wickedly.

I sighed. “I don't know you, so I'll have to take you at your word. But I feel sorry for you if that's true. And one more thing.”

Grin gone, his eyes twitched. “Yes?”

“That is precisely why I don't want you going after my family. If you were after something real, I wouldn't have stopped you. As it is, go after another human here tonight, and I will geld you. Try and enjoy your Curse without a penis.”

He burst out laughing. “Fair enough.” He paused, still smiling. “You're going to be a formidable presence in our world, aren't you?”

“Honestly, unless it affects Tristan, I won't make waves. I don't waste energy on things I'm not passionate about.”

“What a coincidence. Neither do I.” He glanced over at Tristan, who was watching us from across the tent. “Good luck, Mrs. Bane. This is only the beginning.”

“Thank you, I know.”

Sinclair nodded and walked away, disappearing into the crowd. I made a mental note to keep an eye on him for the rest of the evening and then went to Tristan.

He met me halfway and took me into his arms. “Everything all right?”

“Fine. Just had to rescue Hannah from Lust.”

Tristan's mouth twitched. “Sinclair was hunting Hannah?”

“He said he couldn't help it.”

“I'll have a word with him.”

“Already handled.” I rested my head against his chest. “I feel as if I've betrayed my family. They have no idea they're surrounded by immortal beings.”

“They're not in danger, and they seem to be enjoying themselves.”

“They are.” I looked up at him. “Are you enjoying yourself?”

“It's cliché, but this is the best day of my life.” He brushed a strand of hair from my face. “I keep waiting for something to go wrong. For Osric to show up, Heartbreak to surge, or some disaster to strike. But nothing has. It's just . . . perfect.”
