Seeing What’s in Front of You

I roll my eyes. “We all know it’ll be spot on, just like always.”

Dean takes the hot coffee, blowing on it before taking a sip. His eyes widen in surprise.

“Don’t look so surprised. I’m the vibes guy.”

Dean looks at Kassian who explains, “that’s part of Finn’s ability. He can feel people’s vibes. It makes him an excellent bodyguard because he can always tell when someone has bad intentions.”

“That’s really handy.”

Just then, Mars leaves his room. I do my best to be as subtle as I can when I try to catch a glance into the room. I look around but I don’t see anyone hiding inside. They must have left already or maybe they’re still in bed or something.

“Good morning,” Mars says with a bright smile, taking the coffee being offered to him from Finn.

“Holy shit,” Kassian blurts out before covering his mouth with his hands. “Shit, sorry.”

“What?” Mars asks, letting out a long yawn. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing!” Kassian says right away, his voice cracking. “Everyhing is perfect! Don’t mind me!”

“Mars, come meet Dean,” Finn says, gesturing for the two to come closer.

“Lovely to meet you,” Mars says, shaking Dean’s hand.

“You too.”

“If no one is gonna say it then I’ll say it,” I blurt out, pointing at Mars’ throat. “Dude, you have like a necklace of hickies. You looked like someone mauled you last night.”

Mars’ face turns bright red. He throws a hand over his neck before slapping Finn’s shoulder. “Why didn’t you warn me?”

“The lights were off when I left the room this morning! Don’t blame me!”

Mars turns around and goes back into his hotel room. Kassian lets out a sigh before going back into ours, coming back out with a scarf and allowing Mars to borrow it for the day.

As we walk to the cafe, coffees in hand, I can’t help but slide up next to Kassian. Making sure no one but him can hear me, I murmur, “we have to get to the bottom of this.”

“I’m right behind you,” Kassian says, nodding his head.

“Maybe we should rope Dean into helping us. Maybe he can just ask Mars who he’s dating since he’s new to the group.”

“We shouldn’t--” before Kassian says anything more, he’s grabbing the back of my coat and yanking me away from the edge of the sidewalk. A moment later, a car that’s trying to park comes up over the curb before correcting himself and getting back on the street.

I slowly turn towards Kassian, my eyes wide.

Kassian looks just as freaked out as I do.

“That was quick,” I murmur, putting a hand on Kassian’s wrist. “I’m so glad you were paying attention.”

“I wasn’t,” Kassian says, shaking his head. “I just knew that was gonna happen. It was like I’d seen it happen before.”

Dean steps over to us, putting a hand on Kassian’s shoulder. “It’s weird, right?”

“Oh fuck,” Kassian hisses out. “This is because we slept together, isn’t it? Your ability rubbed off on me.”

“Is that the only thing rubbing on you?” Finn asks with a chuckle, making Kassian narrow his eyes at him.

“For now,” I say with a grin. Dean and Kassian both blush.

“It’s jarring,” Kassian murmurs, “I don’t like that at all. How do you deal with that all the time?”
