I was looking at him.
His past.
His daughter.
My hands shook.
“It’s okay.”
I lifted my gaze. Mrs. Reid just held out her hand.
“You don’t have to save this one.”
It felt too close. Too personal. And for the first time in weeks I felt like a stranger. I lifted what was left of the photo and handed it over. Her smile didn’t reach her eyes as she took it.
“I’ll get us a dustpan.” She turned around and slowly walked from the room.
I pushed up from the ground. Pain sliced through my finger. I lifted my hand, catching a tiny shard embedded in my skin. I plucked it free as my cell vibrated in my pocket.
Blood beaded in the cut.
I slid my finger between my lips and sucked as I reached into my pocket.
Unknown.
Again?
Who is this?
Attachment.
Only this time there was a message.
You deserve the truth.
I stilled.
Swallowed.
My world narrowed.
Unknown?
I opened the message, scanned any details, then turned back to the message once more.
Attachment.
I looked away. Don’t open it. Delete it.
Whatever this was, it wasn’t for me.
But it was… wasn’t it?
Whoever this was, wanted me know something.
And not a small something either.
Something that could change everything.
