When he finally enters me, I am so ready for him that I sigh with relief.

I wrap my legs around him and he kisses me as he starts to move inside me.

He fucks me long and slow, building a steady but torturous rhythm while he slides his hand between us and circles my clit.

As my orgasm builds, he holds my gaze and tells me not to look away.

I come silently, holding onto him as if he’s about to slip away from me.

He strokes my face, thrusts deeper, once, twice, three more times. Then he comes too. Loudly. He punches the headboard with release.

Then he looks down at me and says, “Can we do it again? Please? I want to make you come again?”

I’m about to protest, but he turns me over and slides into me again from behind.

“Sam, are you sure?”

“I’ve never been so sure of anything,” he whispers.

Sam is determined to give me a third orgasm, but his determination has tipped into furious fucking instead of paying attention to what my body wants or needs.

It’s like he wants me so much he can’t think straight.

I wriggle beneath him and stroke his hair from his eyes. “Sam, slow down.”

He stops grinding his hips into me and stares at me for a moment, then he kisses me. “That’s better,” I sigh, melting into him again.

A knock on the door makes us both stop.

It flies open and Tanner rushes in. For half a second, his eyes flicker over my parted legs and Sam’s naked ass, but then he says, “It’s Mack. You have to come. Now.”

“Bring him this way,” I instruct the viking. He’s carrying his friend as if he weighs nothing.

I lead them down into the basement, through my archives, and into the corridor that leads to my section of private chambers. My family had them built years ago, and what no one knows is that there’s a tunnel that goes all the way to the Thornfield Estate on the outskirts of town.

Not that we’ll be using the tunnel today.

I push open the door to one of the guest suites, and the viking carries the shifter to the bed. His polar bear dog has been following us and immediately jumps up onto the bed.

Mack’s eyes roll and he groans as if his entire body is about to dissolve with the pain he’s feeling.

A moment later, the water mage, plus Nova and the werewolf come barreling into the room. Nova throws herself onto Mack’s chest, running her hands over him like she’s about to stop breathing herself if it turns out he’s not okay.

I study them, trying to recall what it felt like when I loved someone that much.

But those are memories buried deep in the black enclaves of my soul. They are unreachable. And I like it that way.

I spin on my heels and stride out of the room. I pass Miranda in the hallway. She has changed back into her customary outfit of black pants, black rollneck sweater, and thick-rimmed glasses.

She nods at the room. “The shifter?”

“He’s getting worse.”
