She gestured at the remaining row of dried plants. “Up there.”
“Huh,” he said, more to himself. “Never noticed those.”
She tipped her head toward the two tree carcasses haunting the large planters in the corners. “Want to help me move those outside?”
“No. Don’t touch them. I like everything the way it is.”
It sounded like even he didn’t believe that. “Do you?”
With a curse, he marched to the windows and pulled the curtains closed, leaving them in the dark yet again. She hated the dark.
“No one opens these. I won’t even let the housekeeper touch them.”
Explains the dust bunnies.
She softened her voice. “Does the light hurt you?”
“No. Yes. Not used to it.”
The knock came out of nowhere, loud and startling in the shadows that swirled around them.
Oliver turned toward the sound. “Who the fuck are you expecting?”
“No one.”
He considered her for two breaths.
“I swear. No one,” she repeated.
His expression turned almost comically pained. “What the fuck is wrong with everyone today?”
She followed close behind him as he strode out of the kitchen.
As Oliver opened the front door, sunlight swamped the foyer. After being subjected to the pitch black, even Addy recoiled from the harsh brightness.
A visibly pregnant brunette stood on their doorstep. Petite and pretty, she rested one hand on her impossibly large stomach and looked between Oliver and Addison with violet eyes.
“Is Kyle Yarrow’s sister here?” American. Not a trace of Irish lilt.
Addison spoke up first. “Who are you?”
The brunette swallowed. “My name is Sylvia. I’m looking for Kyle. Are you Addison?”
Where would she have learned about her arrival in Ireland? Very few people knew of her whereabouts, and none of them were the chatty kind.
Before Addison could respond, Oliver moved in front of her and widened his stance. She bristled. The last thing she needed was a bodyguard.
When she tried to step around him, he blocked her path. Irritation flaring, she rose on her toes and looked past his shoulder at the stranger. “Why are you looking for Kyle?”
Sunlight glanced off the woman’s diamond nose stud. “Because I’m going to kill him.”
Ah. Another death threat.
Addison poked Oliver’s shoulder. “See? Told you. Lake Como.”
Chapter 9
Did Kyle get another woman pregnant? By the looks of it, Sylvia was ready to pop. My God, how did she even manage to drive herself here with a stomach that large? Was she carrying triplets?
