“I do miss having someone to do things with, though,” he said.
“Right? Like, even the little stuff. Going for a walk or having someone to come with you to parties.”
“Having someone to sneak out of parties with.”
“Someone to zip up the back of my dress,” I said. “Or to fill the coffee maker with water. Better yet, to make the coffee.”
“Someone to let the dog out when I’m too tired.”
“I’ll let the dog out for you,” I said.
He glanced at me.
“I’m a night person,” I said. “I can let her out while I’m here.”
“I’m a morning person. I can do the coffee.”
I smiled. “Okay. Deal.”
“Sounds like we’re going to make good roommates,” he said.
“I’m a great roommate.”
“Oh yeah? Why’s that?” he asked.
“I’m clean. I’m quiet. I don’t cook, though.”
“I love cooking,” he said.
“Okay. So you cook and I’ll clean up.”
He looked at me. “Who does the grocery shopping?”
“Whoever’s already out running around.”
“We should keep the list on a shared Google Doc.”
“That is a great idea,” I said. “Also, whoever gets the groceries doesn’t have to put them away.”
He sucked air through his teeth. “Then I can never find anything.”
“Hmm. Good point. Okay, how about whoever is home while the other person gets the groceries has to clean out the fridge so there’s room.”
He nodded. “Perfect.”
“Look at how good we are at negotiations,” I said, smiling. “We are going to be the best maid of honor and best man team. They’re so lucky to have us.”
“I agree.” He grinned at the windshield.
He navigated to the address I punched into Maps and drove to my apartment. When we got there, I left him in my living room with my vast fake plant collection and his dog and went to pack.
I had no idea what I was going to wear. I had cute clothes, but not really wedding attire.
“Do you think a red dress is okay for the ceremony?” I called, raking through my closet. “It’s a Christmas Eve wedding, so that works, right?”
He came into my bedroom and leaned in the doorway. “Which dress are you thinking?” he asked.
I pulled it from the rack and held it out to examine it. “This one. Should I try it on?” I said, looking at him.
