A Married Little Christmas

“I think you should. You’ll be in all the pictures. You want to make sure you like it.”

“Okay.”

I went to the bathroom and wiggled into it. It still fit.

I’d bought it for a holiday party at my ex-husband’s work a few years ago and hadn’t worn it since. I’d felt pretty that night—until he spent the whole time drinking too much and staring at his coworker’s girlfriend instead of me.

Now the dress was sort of ruined for me, but I didn’t exactly have a huge assortment of formal wear to choose from, and I couldn’t afford to go out and buy something. Especially now. Things were weird at work, and I should probably be saving.

I smoothed it out and looked at myself in the bathroom mirror.

“How’s it look?” he called.

I opened the door. “What do you think?”

He stared at me. He stared at me so long I looked down to stare at myself. “What?”

“Nothing, it’s just…”

“Is it too tight? You think it’s too flashy?” I looked back up at him.

“No, it’s… it’s great. I think it’ll work fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“It’s perfect.”

I nodded, looking it over again.

“Are you walking me down the aisle?” I asked.

“Huh?”

“You’re the best man. So you walk me down the aisle, right? I mean, I guess we find out at the rehearsal tomorrow, but… shouldn’t we match? What are you wearing?”

“I didn’t think of that,” he said.

“You should get your suit and try it on.”

He looked at his watch. “Okay, we have to be quick, though, if we’re going to make it to the engagement party.”

He ran out to his car and came back with the garment bag. I waited, sitting in my dress at the end of the bed, for him to change in the bathroom.

I heard the lock come off the door. The second I saw him, heat crept up my cheeks.

He looked… wow. Just wow.

He’d been in a suit when I met him last night, but not like this. His shirt had been unbuttoned, and his jacket was off. I’d gotten the end of a long day version yesterday, which was still great, but the pressed and polished suit of today was soooo much sexier.

He went to court. This was his norm—which meant this man was just wandering the earth looking like this on a daily basis. Criminal.

“What do you think?” he asked, buttoning his cuff link, completely oblivious. “Does it match?”

“I think so?” I said, my voice a touch too high.

“I’ve got a red tie that should work,” he said, digging in the garment bag. “So your ex,” he said, turning to my mirror to put it on. “What did he do?”

“Like, for work? Or to me?”
