I lower my voice even more. “Yes, it definitely does. Like...” I gesture helplessly. “Our sex life before was always just...okay.”
“Before when?”
“When we were young.”
She nods.
“We were young and inexperienced. It was fine. I didn't think it was bad.”
“You have a child, so presumably you figured out the important parts.”
“Barely.”
She snorts.
“I'm serious. It was good. We liked it. We had fun. But we were teenagers. We didn't know shit. But apparently using sex for four years to hide from your feelings for your kid's mom really does a man wonders.”
Jamie chokes on her food. “Jesus—”
I hand her my water.
She's coughing and laughing at the same time.
“Don't fucking die in my classroom.”
She finally manages to swallow. “Blaire!”
I fan myself with one of the papers I'm supposed to be grading.
“Simon is a god in bed.”
Jamie stares at me. “A god?”
“Yes. I’m actually more and more shocked every time we have sex. Every time I think ‘okay, that was incredible. Sex cannot get any better than that.’ Then…” I drop my voice. “ It gets even fucking better. Like what the fuck was he doing with all those women?”
“Practice, apparently.”
“Apparently!” I'm laughing so hard now my stomach hurts.
Jamie wipes beneath her eyes. “You're thanking four years of Simon Crane's emotional avoidance for your current sex life.”
“A hoe phase with measurable outcomes.” I keep a straight face for not even a full second before losing it.
I fold forward over my desk, laughing into my arms because there are still students in this building and I cannot be heard discussing Simon's measurable outcomes.
“So worth the five-year wait?” Jamie asks when I finally come back up for air.
“Very much worth the wait.”
My next period bell rings.
We both groan.
Jamie starts packing up her lunch while I look at the stack of papers still sitting on my desk.
“Three more days,” she reminds me.
“Three more days.”
