“Love you, Dad.”
“Love you too, Chris.”
I watched Angela and Christine walk away until they disappeared into the crowd, then turned to Greyson.
“Okay. What’s going on?”
He slipped his hand into mine. “Dinner.”
“Why didn’t we go to dinner with them?”
“Because I want you all to myself tonight.”
“Well, why didn’t you just say so? I’ll never object to that.”
“Maybe I like being mysterious.” He brought my hand to his mouth and kissed my knuckles. “Come on. Let’s go.”
I loved Greyson’s house.
It was big without being ostentatious, tucked into a quiet neighborhood with plenty of trees and a backyard that seemed to go on forever. It was a warm home filled with photographs of Christine, football memorabilia, and furniture that looked like it was actually meant to be used.
It was very Greyson.
And over the past six months, I’d started to feel comfortable there. Maybe a little too comfortable.
I’d already claimed a drawer in his bedroom, and there was a collection of my toiletries in his bathroom. He’d even bought a second coffee mug with a ridiculous astronomy joke on it because I complained that all his mugs were boring.
When we walked inside tonight, my eyes went straight to the dining room, where the table was set for two. Candles flickered in the center, surrounded by a beautiful arrangement of flowers.
And the smell coming from the kitchen was incredible.
I stopped in my tracks. “Greyson.”
He smiled. “Surprise.”
“What is all this?”
“Dinner.”
“I can see that. You… you did all this?”
“Well, I hired a private chef.”
“Wow. You must really want to impress me.”
“You have no idea.”
A few minutes later, we were sitting at the table and the chef walked in. He introduced himself and explained the meal he’d prepared. There was a beautiful salad, roasted vegetables, and a main course that smelled so good my stomach growled before he’d even finished describing it.
Greyson thanked him, and after making sure everything was ready, the man left.
Then it was just us. I looked around the candlelit dining room.
“This is really sweet.”
“You deserve it.”
Dinner was wonderful. Not just the food, although that was amazing.
