Normally, I live for summer in Seattle, especially with my job. I get to use test products that my coworkers and I designed. I spend as much of it as possible outside hiking, camping, climbing, and enjoying the Sound and lakes. I often spend all weekend without cell service, which used to be the best part.

But this summer, I’ve caught myself checking for bars at every switchback. Last weekend, I hiked an extra two miles to a ridge just to see if I’d get service, and when my coworker Jess asked why, I told her it was for the view.

The view was great, like usual, but I stood up there grinning at my phone like an idiot while she took pictures of the view because I had one bar. So I took one too, just to send to Marcus.

Me:

This is my view today. Wish you could see it in person.

Marcus:

Damn. That almost makes me want to leave Chicago.

Me:

Only almost?

Marcus:

Depends on the offer. You gonna make one, or just tease me about it?

Me:

I can offer a personal tour from a mountain professional. Gear included, and I’ll even carry the pack.

Marcus:

Generous. What’s the catch?

Me:

Squeezing into my one person tent.

Marcus:

Tempting

Me:

I’ll get you out here one day.

In July, my friends and I rent a house on the coast for a long weekend. We spend the days on the beach and the nights around a bonfire, drinking beer and hanging out. I laugh until my stomach hurts.

Four years ago I moved here not knowing a single person. Now I’ve got people who’ll happily split the cost of a vacation home with me and I don’t take that for granted.

But after everyone heads to bed, I stay by the fire and pull out my phone to text Marcus.

Me:

Does Chicago have good beaches in the area?

I’m shocked when I see his reply since it’s so late. Maybe he couldn’t sleep.

Marcus:

Maybe, but I avoid them.
