Ever After

“I had plenty of those, but they were mainly over the boutonnieres.”

“No second thoughts?” he asks, giving me a crooked smile.

“Not a single one about you ever.” I look him up and down. “Wow,” I say softly. “You look amazing.” He’s wearing the same suit as me, but he looks like a model rather than a chronically messy psychic. Already my jacket is creased, and I can see a mark on the arm. In contrast, Levi’s suit clings to his long legs and shows off those broad shoulders of his. His hair shines and his gorgeous face is soft and full of love.

“Same,” he says. “I missed you last night.”

“I missed you too.”

He draws me close, his hands on my hips. “We’re getting married.”

I try not to smile. “Thank you for telling me. Otherwise, I’d be tremendously overdressed for the bookshop.”

He laughs, drops a kiss on my lips, and pulls me back to our group. We’ve grown in numbers now, and it’s loud. Isa is standing next to Rhys, talking and waving his hands while Rhys watches him with an indulgent look on his face. I had a lot of reservations about Rhys when we first met, but we’ve gotten closer this year and a lot of that is down to how he treats Isa. They both spent unasked for time with a psychopath last year, and Rhys has been incredibly patient with Isa’s need to stay close to him. It also doesn’t hurt that Rhys has stopped trying to fuck Levi.

He looks up as if sensing my thoughts and offers me a wry grin. “Wow. You up on a charge?”

“Rhys,” sighs Levi.

I laugh. “Why? You looking for your next date?”

We all turn as the viscount appears at the door of the registry office. “Ah, what a beautiful morning,” he says, waving his hands dramatically. “I’ve just been talking to the registrar. Such a lovely lady.”

“We’d better get married quickly,” I mutter to Levi. “Before he manages to involve her in some freaky shit all of his own making.”

He snorts. “Shush.”

I turn to him. “Do not even try to be polite. You do remember the little fiasco in February, don’t you?”

“I don’t know what you mean.” He’s obviously holding back a smile.

I pinch his chin. “Okay, Pinocchio Black.”

The viscount trots over to us. “They’re nearly ready for you. Another five minutes and we can go in.” He takes our arms. “My dear boys. I am so delighted for you both.”

“Thank you,” Levi says, giving him his special smile. “That means a lot.”

The viscount releases us and puts his hand into the inner pocket of his jacket. “I wanted to give you your wedding present now.”

“In case we don’t go through with it?” I ask interestedly, and Levi nudges me.

The viscount just laughs. “Never going to happen, my boy. You’re going to be together forever.” He taps his nose. “I have it on very good authority.”

“Oh my god,” I say faintly.

He winks. “Not that high up. I had the honour of conducting a seance with a witch over in Doncaster last week. Very interesting.”

Levi clears his throat. “Well, that’s good news anyway,” he says in a cheery voice that makes me smile. He takes the envelope the viscount offers him. “You shouldn’t have.” He opens the envelope and his mouth drops open. “You really shouldn’t have.”

“What is it?” I ask. He hands me the envelope which contains a photo and what looks like a set of car keys. I take out the photo. “A car?” I ask. “Another one?”

The viscount nods. “You have a long journey ahead of you for your honeymoon. I wanted to ensure it was a comfortable drive.”

“Oh my god,” Levi says. “You already gave me a car after the incident at Ingram Hall.”

Tarquin waves a careless hand. “That wasn’t as good as this one.” He winks at me. “I’ve had it blessed by a warlock in Penrith, so you’re all good to go. Now that was an interesting weekend.”

“Probably much more interesting than watching Game of Thrones,” I say glumly.
