Ripping the Odds

His form went rigid as he slowly turned around. “Me.”

“Motherfuck!”

The glass slipped from my hand, shattering into a million tiny shards on the floor. I sprung to my feet, closing the distance between us in five strides. Clamping a hand on his shoulder, I waited. Shame and regret flooded his mismatched eyes. How long had he been suffering in silence?

“When did this happen?”

“The night the girls went to Shade.”

Fucking hell. Weeks ago.

“Who else knows?”

“No one.”

“We don’t keep secrets from each other.”

He dropped his chin to his chest. “I know.”

“Do you want to do this now or later?”

“Now, I guess.”

Nodding to the couch in the corner of my office, I motioned for him to sit then spun on my heel to snag my cell off the desk. After shooting off a quick text to Kas and Dimi, I grabbed the broom and dustpan from the closet and proceeded to clean up the mess of glass from the floor. By the time I finished, my other two brothers were barging through the door like their asses were on fire. That was my fault, considering I used our emergency 9-1-1 code when I messaged them.

“What the fuck is going on?” Kas demanded, slightly out of breath.

“Sit. Both of you. Mak has something he needs to get off his chest.”

With the four of us in our usual spots, Mak blew out a breath and started.

“The night you all went to Shade after the girls, Zak had me following Brian. Something about the guy doesn't sit right with me and hasn’t for a long time.”

He bowed his head, cracking the knuckles on both hands. Kas peered at Dimi, then they both turned to me, confusion evident on their faces. I did the only thing I could, shaking my head and waiting for Mak to gather his thoughts. It only took a few breaths.

“When he finished work at the casino, he met a woman at Quantum. She was young, too young for a man in his fifties, plus she looked scared. I tried to get closer to hear what they were saying, but that’s where things got fuzzy.”

“Fuzzy?” Dimi probed.

“As in the rest of the night is a complete blank. I woke up in one of our VIP suites in bed with the same woman Brian was with.”

“Fuck. You were drugged.” Kas concluded.

“I think we both were.”

“What do you mean, you think? Didn’t you question her?” He pushed.

“No.”

“So go ask her now.”

“I don’t know her name.”

“Oh my god.” Dimi smacked his palm to his forehead. “Please don’t tell me you snuck out of the room.”

Mak winced. “Okay, I won’t. But I left my business card on the night stand, so maybe she’ll contact me.”

“Jesus Christ.” I pinched the bridge of my nose. “No wonder you’re still single.”
