We both stood their awkwardly for a few seconds.

"Do you have a lot of clients?" I asked.

"Actually, I just started a few days ago," he said. "I'm not really sure."

His face pleaded with me to not ask any other questions he couldn't answer.

Finally, from around the corner of the reception area came a little old lady.

She was so small!

I guessed she could have been a hundred years old. She was so scrunched up and wrinkled.

But she was quite feisty. She strolled over behind the receptionist. The first thing she did was to smack him on the ass.

"Ha, ha, ha, forgive Sam here," she said. "He didn't get hired for his brains."

At that, she winked at me.

"When do clients usually pay you?" I asked.

"You can pay in advance," she said, waving aside the question.

She then looked at me more carefully, her eyes narrowing. She scratched her chin thinking hard about it.

"I've seen you before," she said.

"No, you haven't," I said.

"I don't forget a face. I may be getting a little old, but my memory is just as good as it ever was," she said.

I thought about dashing out of the office right then. The truth was, once, about five years ago, my dad had been on the cover of a popular business magazine.

Inside that same magazine had been a few photos, including a picture of Daddy with me. There was simply no way this old woman could have seen that picture.

And even if she had, how would she have remembered it?

"Yeah, I remember you. You're Ross Bardot's little girl. Are you even eighteen?" She asked.

"I'm nineteen," I said.

"Shit, you look a lot younger than that to me." She said. "Let me see your ID"

I took out my driver's license and showed it to her. She showed it to her receptionist.

"Does that look fake to you?" She asked.

The receptionist stooped down low to take a look.

"I guess it could be," he said, scratching his head.

The old woman suddenly smacked him across the head.

"Dummy. It's as authentic as they come," she said. "See the seal there? That can't be copied."

"Oh," he said, fixing his hair where he'd been slapped.

The old woman let out a sigh and looked at me.
