C: I’m getting my massive butt ready for work I haven’t yet felt sick, maybe it’s my lucky day!?

R: Ha-ha it’s still a tiny ass, and I’m glad you’re not sick. Eat a cookie to fight the sickness, and water, so you won’t pass out again! By the way, you need a badge that you’re carrying heavy cargo in that tummy!

C: It’s too early, give me few more months, I don’t want anyone else to know.

R: Ok, but still consider it. I got to run, I’m about to wake up Arianna with a cold bucket of water, she is still sleeping! :p

That makes me laugh as I text to Aisha, imagining Arianna’s screeching in surprise. Although I lied about the sickness, I don’t want them to get worried. I want to keep this secret for a little bit.

C: Are you up?

A: No, go away, got another 15 minutes of sleep yet!

C: Get your butt in the shower, girl, and caffeinate!

A: Will do, bye and look after the twins, tell them I love them! Have a good day sister and good luck breaking the news to Logan!

C: Will do and thanks, I will need it!

With the smile still on my face, I leave the apartment, and head to the nearest train station. I try to forget all about the call I will have to make, and about my estranged parents. For now, I’m just going to concentrate on trying to get to work.

When talking with my sisters, I didn't mention that Logan is the CEO of Bank of America. I don’t know much about the man myself, so I kept the rest to myself to escape their judgment. My sisters felt hopeful, so I took it as a good sign.

Maybe they’re right. We will have to wait and see. The possibility of a new life is burning in my chest. The lives growing inside makes me see this world with different eyes.

The Anger of Doubt

The day flies by quickly, and since I was working with Joshua on the new project, I didn’t even notice. The office today is full of buzzing active energy, urging people to move faster and get on with their jobs.

The ringing phone on Joshua’s desk startles us from our intense work. A fantastic view overlooking Canary Wharf greets me as I answer the phone.

“Good afternoon, Alexanders Investment Bank, Joshua Price’s office. Cassandra Knight speaking, how may I help you?” I answer the call cheerfully, having no idea what the actual time is.

“Oh hello, Cassandra, this is Carl from the America headquarters. Let me point out that it’s six o’clock p.m. now, your time.”

“Oh my God, Carl, I apologize. Our arrangement slipped my mind. I have been busy at work. Is there any chance I could talk to him?” I hold my breath, hoping he is not too angry to talk.

“Actually, that’s why I am calling. Mr. Cade asked me to contact you because he got too impatient waiting.” There’s a hint of amusement in Carl’s tone. “Shall I put you through?”

With a sinking feeling, I realize this is happening. I am about to speak with my arrogant CEO. “Can you give me a moment? I need to get to my desk.”

“Sure, I’ll hold the call.”

I put him on hold and press the extension to my desk line. I turn, ready to make an excuse, only to find an unreadable expression on my boss’ face. With no time to ponder, I tell Joshua, “I need to take this call. It’s urgent. I will come back shortly.”

“No need, I have to make a personal call also. I see you in a bit?” He dismisses me as he checks his watch, and I hurry out of his office and into mine. Before I can chicken out, I pick up the phone and a decadent rasp fills my ear.

“I thought you wanted to talk to me, not waste my time with games?” Logan accuses me in a frustrated voice that elicits shivers.

“Hello, Logan, how have you been?” I smile despite myself, trying to collect my thoughts to break the news.

“Listen, I don’t have time for the small talk. How about you just spill it, so I can go back to business.” Grumpy Cade has a “no bullshit” attitude today.

Since dismissing any attempt at the civilized and polite conversation, I do as asked. For some reason, it makes me smile. The persistent game to push and pull my boundaries, just to see what I would do next, gets on my nerves. Dickhead!

“Logan, have you seen the email I sent to you? I think Carl gave me your personal one.” I try to gauge if he knows anything about it.

“No, in truth, I had really little time to check it. This Monday has been really intense at work,” he says, a little bit calmer and friendlier than before.
