“That’d be wonderful. Are you’re sure you don’t mind?”

“Not at all. Just follow me.” Tina disappeared through the door and Demetri gave Stacy no choice but to follow.

When they were alone in the room, the same one she’d been in just the night before, she sank down into a chair. She didn’t want her ex anymore—she couldn’t even stand to think of him as her husband any longer—but it hurt knowing he wasn’t even trying to be discreet anymore.

“Where do I sign?” she asked, determined to stick to business. She could be professional. She would. Nope, she would pay no attention to the way Tina had emphasized the word eaten. And she’d completely forget she spent a good part of the previous night with her lawyer’s tongue buried inside of her. As far as she was concerned nothing happened. She’d watched a boring television show.

Or maybe a porn flick. She was a free woman, she could do what she wanted to. Yeah, that’s where the images were coming from. Subliminal thoughts planted by some porn that had her imagination running wild. That was why she could almost feel Demetri’s hands stroking her body, his tongue delving between her folds to gently lick the—

“Is there something going on between you and that pen that I should know about? Should I leave you alone for a little while?”

“What?”

“You were fondling my pen. Would you like to keep it?”

She dropped it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You looked like you were going to give it a blow job.”

“I most certainly did not.”

“Yeah,” he chuckled. “You did. Listen, I understand if you aren’t ready to take this step. I just got the impression that you wanted to be finished with your ex as soon as possible. I wasn’t trying to corner you with the papers.”

“It’s not that. It’s...This is going to sound so stupid, but it just—I don’t know how to feel, knowing I’ve been replaced so quickly. I don’t want him back, but he’s already replaced me. He hasn’t even signed separation papers and he’s moved on with his life. We were together for nine years.”

“It’s normal to feel conflicted. I’ll take these back, and you just let me know when you’re ready. I shouldn’t have pushed you.”

“I’m ready now.” She tried to take the papers from his hands, but he wouldn’t release them. “Demetri, let go, I’m ready to sign them now. I just want him out of my life.”

“Have you even grieved?”

“Why would I?” She tilted her head to the side and stared at him as though he’d grown a second head.

“You were with him a long time. It’s only natural...”

“No. I don’t want to grieve, I just want to move on with my life. Give me the damn paperwork so I can sign it.”

“Stacy, I don’t think you should press this. You might still change your mind.”

“No, I won’t. I promise you that.” Even she heard the viciousness in her voice. “Demetri,” she said, taking a deep calming breath as her guru had suggested earlier. “Give me the papers.”

“Why don’t you want him anymore? Is it just because he fucked another woman?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

She shook her head. She was not going to get into this with him. She was not going to tell her lover why she was leaving her husband. Talk about awkward.

“Then I won’t do it.”

“Give me the papers.” She tried to jerk the out of his hand again, but his grip was too strong.

“Not until you tell me why.”

Walking over to the small fridge that was kept in the conference room—the one Tina had told her about after her fourth trip back to the main office—Stacy opened one of the hidden cabinets and took out a glass. She pulled a pitcher of water from the fridge and tried desperately to remember everything Savon had told her about quieting her mind. He’d spent at least fifteen minutes trying to explain it to her before he’d had her attempt it herself.

After another deep breath she poured herself some water.
