“Oh, that’s nobody,” Romeo said.

It was him.

“Really? Kind of looks like you.”

“Nooooo…” he said.

It was him.

“No? You just happen to have a picture of some random little kid at Disney hanging on your wall?”

“Guess so.”

“And this?” It was a six inch piece of black cloth, about two inches wide. One end was wrapped in multiple rings of different colored tapes, the other end was thumbtacked to the wall.

“That’s a karate thing.”

“Karate, huh? You some kind of ninja?”

“Something like that.”

“Yeah well, I'm a lifeguard,” she said, as if there was some kind of competition.

“Really?”

“Really. Red Cross CPR certified and everything. Worked as a lifeguard every summer through high school. That and the restaurant.”

“Cap’s.”

“Yepper. And you probably spent your summers at Monty’s.”

“I’m still there.”

She looked over at his paintings. “But that’s not what you really want to do. Is it?”

“Not really.”

“Yeah,” she sighed. “There’s a lot of that going around.” Then she made her way over to the stack. She lifted the sheet covering the canvases. “Do you mind?”

“No, please.”

She pulled the sheet out of the way and flipped through the paintings. She was no art major but she’d always had a good eye, and an interest, and she knew what she liked. “Hmmm…”

“Hmmm what?”

“Just hmmm…” she said.

He felt nervous, again. For the second time this girl was making him nervous. He wanted her to like them. To like his paintings. To like him. Secretly, he wished they were better.

Nikki climbed into the passenger seat of Patrick’s car. He didn’t open the door for her but that didn’t matter. Most of the guys she dated over the years hadn’t done that kind of thing either.

“So…,” he said.

“So…,” she said back.

“Me and you, huh?”

“Looks like it.” She couldn’t have been more excited.
