“That’s what you get for fucking her ho-ass,” Heaven heard her saying in her head. Instead she asked, “Why did you want me to call you?”

“?’Cause I needed to hear your voice; that’s all. I pulled some real grimy shit on you. And I ain’t gonna front, baby. It kinda had me fucked up for a minute. You know I didn’t wanna press them charges on you, right?”

Heaven felt the beginning of tears welling in her eyes. “Yeah, I know.” He hadn’t cooperated with the police, but the prosecutor’s office proceeded anyway. Plus, the naked bitch beneath his body was alive—and traumatized, let her tell it—and had been able to give the prosecutors everything they needed to convict her.

“I shoulda never brought that broad to our crib.”

Heaven blinked, then scowled. Was that supposed to be an apology? “No, Freedom. How about you should have never been fucking that bitch in the first damn place?”

“You right.”

“Mmph. Well, I hope her pussy was worth it.”

“Nah, that shit was fuckin’ trash.”

That was definitely not the answer she was going for. She shook her head again. “You know what, Free—”

“Baby, come back to bed,” cooed a woman in the background. “I miss my daaaaddy.”

“Yo, what the fuck,” Freedom snapped. “Get up off my dick. Damn. You know what, matter of fact. Get ya shit, yo, and bounce.”

Heaven recoiled. Sadly, she heard the woman apologizing, begging to stay.

Disgusted, Heaven ended the call. She wasn’t mad. She was relieved. He was still no damn good. Out there being who he was—a womanizing bastard.

She slipped the phone back in its hiding place as Sabina was coming into the cell.

“Ohmygod! Have you heard? Wait,” she said, sounding almost out of breath. “This is for you.” She handed Heaven a white crocheted pullover. “I finished it this morning.”

Heaven took the crocheted dress/pullover shirt thingy and placed it up to her body. “Ooh, this is cute, girl. Thanks.”

“Well, I hope you can fit it.” She craned her head back to glance at Heaven’s ass. “But, uh, I don’t know. There might be some complications trying to stretch it over all that”—she pointed—“wagon you got dragging back there.”

Heaven rolled her eyes dismissively, then laughed. “Girl, what. Ever. Now what was it you were asking me if I’d heard?”

Sabina kicked off her clogs. “Oh, yeah, right. Wait?” She eyed her. “Are you okay?”

Heaven feigned ignorance. “Yeah. Why?”

Sabina shrugged, grabbing her MP3 player from her locker. “I don’t know. You seem, like down or something.”

Heaven waved her on. “No, I’m fine.”

“Oh, okay.” Sabina climbed up on her bunk. “Anyway. Did you hear anything about what happened to that Angelica chick in the showers last night?”

“Who?”

Sabina tilted her head. “You, know. That loudmouthed chick with the birthmark on the side of her face.”

Heaven knew whom she was speaking of—the Spanish chick always sneering and giving her dirty looks. “Oh her. What happened to her?”

“Somebody snuck her in the showers.”

Heaven’s eyes widened. “Oh no. That’s awful.”

Sabina shook her head. “Yeah, and whoever did it also bit her in the face.”

“What?” Heaven screeched. “What the hell is wrong with these women? Who the hell would bite someone in the face?”
