“Mica that isn’t going to happen”

“So you really aren’t going out with anyone, and wouldn’t even consider dating one of these big shots? They’re loaded.” Mica asked her.

“Nope, not interested. I’m just trying to make some money and get into a career that I can count on.”

“Well Mr. Mulcheck will be making you full time very soon. We can all tell you got the touch, and handle things perfectly. You know Dmitri hates it when the bar gets so crazy he can’t keep up. He gets pissed at the other bartenders. However when you eased your way back there and started making drinks, helping him keep up, he looked relieved.”

“He didn’t seem relieved he seemed ready to toss me out of there.”

“Well, he thinks needing help makes him look bad. He’s a tough one but he knows his stuff. He’s been bartending here for many years and is close to Mr. Mulcheck.”

“Good to know.”

“Oh boy, Maloney is waving me over.” Mica headed toward the group of men and Annabella did her rounds making sure that things were under control.

As another group of people arrived and made their way to the bar, she could tell that Dmitri and the others needed some help again. She made her way through the crowd and behind the bar. She heard the gentleman who just came in with about five other men ask for two bottles of Don Julio Real, a tequila that runs about $350.00 a bottle. She recognized the guy from last week and his crew he was with.

“I can grab those Dmitri if it helps.” She said. He looked at her, as if surprised she snuck back there. “If it’s not a problem.”

“Of course not.” She said and then said hello to the gentleman and his friends.

“Our night is made. We were all hoping to see you again Annabella.” The guy said and his friends were all smiling and looking at her.

They were a flirty bunch. She grabbed two of the bottles and then went back for several shot glasses. “Well I’m glad you chose to return to Gable’s this evening. How was your work week?” She asked, knowing that the man owned an advertising firm a few blocks down the street.

“Prosperous and tiresome beautiful. I need to relax and so do my buddies.” He winked at her and she smiled softly. She showed him the bottles to inspect before she got his approval to open them. She poured them each a shot. “You too Annabella. Have a shot with us.”

“Well I would love to but I have a long night ahead of me.” She told him.

They began to protest. “Oh wait, she was telling jokes last week, how about a joke, a good bartender joke?” One of the guys asked.

She looked towards Dmitri. “Hey Dmitri, you know any good bartender jokes?”

“No.” He said and the guys at the bar as well as the others within ear shot laughed.

“I got one and then you say one.” The guy she believed his name was Jim said to her and then he started telling a joke. It was something silly about a guy walking into the bar looking for sex, but the guys found it amusing, so she told one next.

“Okay, here’s one for you.” She said and began to tell the joke.

“An older man walks into a bar wearing a stovepipe hat, a waist coat in black and a phony beard. He sits down at the bar and orders a drink. As the bartender set it down, he asked, “Going to a party?”

“Yeah, a costume party,” the man answers, “I’m supposed to come dressed as my love life.”

“But you look like Abe Lincoln,” protests the bartender.

“That’s right. My last four scores were seven years ago.”

They all started laughing about the joke, the bar chuckling along with them. She poured them all another shot as the guy placed his credit card down on the bar. They had drawn some attention and a quick look past the guys and she saw that Griska was near Lucca, both smirking and Ched Maloney appeared to be giving Mica a hard time. She better get over there.

“You’re coming back, right? You’re the reason we’re here tonight gorgeous!”

One of the guys yelled to her, and they all raised their glasses towards her and she smiled. “I’ll be back. Have to keep working.” She said and then looked at Dmitri who seemed to be slightly smirking and shook his head. She’d win him over and maybe make him smile. She thought to herself.

On her way out from behind the bar there were a few regulars who said hello and she greeted them, then Mel asked her a question about some guests who were sitting by a table in the corner. She gave her the approval she needed and then waved at the guys and women at that table and they waved back. As she passed she caught sight of Dante in a dead stare at her and she gave him the once over as she passed and heard him chuckle. Quickly she got over to Ched Maloney’s table.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to spill it but your friend was laughing and then started swaying his arms and knocked into me. It was a little spill and not the whole bottle.” Mica said to a guy who seemed to be Mr. Maloney’s partner or maybe security, Annabella still wasn’t sure.

She had seen a lot of different people in the last two weeks working here, and some were more important than others. Some Lucca made her stay clear of and warned her it was for her own safety, which gave her the chills, and then some were business men like these guys, who made a lot of money and liked attention.
