“I couldn’t ask for a more wonderful person to share my life with. Or a sexier one.” The crowd laughed again and I winked at all of them. Pike was chuckling. “You’re my dream man, you always have been, but more than that, you’re a real person. You’re a person with hopes and dreams and fears, a person that loves me so much, it’s impossible for me not to love you in return. And I do. I love you beyond words. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”

We exchanged rings—Morgan had been holding onto Pike’s and Michelle had been holding onto mine—and then, at last, we shared our first kiss as husband and wife.

It was the sweetest kiss I had ever known.

Pike led me afterwards to the rustic barn where we were holding our reception. The very same barn, in fact, where we’d hooked up on that infamous Christmas night so many years ago. It wasn’t full of loud throbbing music and drunk young adults banging it out on cheap booze, though. Instead, fairy lights had been hung all over, with chairs and tables laid out for food, and everything in the middle cleared off so that we had room for a dance floor. Flowers were hanging from the ceiling, making everything smell sweet, and there was a small table with pictures of Pike and me on it so that people could get a glimpse into our relationship.

Everyone cheered as we entered, and I couldn’t stop grinning. Pike held out his hands. “Shall we?” he asked, indicating the dance floor.

I didn’t plan on dancing much, thanks to my pregnancy, but we had wanted to do the first dance together as a couple, and we’d practiced forever with Amber to get it right.

Pike led me out onto the dance floor, wrapping his arm around my waist to the small of my back, his other hand taking mine, and we began to move as the music struck up. I could see my family and friends all around us, smiling. My mom looked like she was going to burst into tears at any moment. It made me even happier to see that everyone was happy for us, that we weren’t alone in this—that we had the support and enthusiasm of the people that we loved most.

“How are you feeling?” Pike asked as he guided me in a slow circle across the dance floor.

“Amazing.” I laughed as he twirled me out and then guided me back into his side. “But my feet aren’t going to like me very much.”

That was something about pregnancy that I probably should’ve expected but didn’t—swollen feet that got achy very quickly.

Pike chuckled. “I’ll massage your feet later.”

He seemed to enjoy doing that, and I sure as hell wasn’t going to stop him. It made my entire body relax when he massaged my feet. “Have I mentioned I love you?”

“Oh, good, phew.” Pike feigned relief. “I wasn’t really sure, you know, what with the marrying me and declaring your love in front of everyone we know and all that…”

I was tempted to pinch him or something, but I was worried that would make us trip, and I didn’t want to end our first dance sprawled across the floor like idiots—so I settled for a glare.

Pike just laughed.

After our first dance, we let everyone else take to the dance floor while I relaxed and got to dig into the delicious food. It was a fun, relaxed night, with Morgan and Michelle making speeches, and Mom and Dad saying how happy they were for me, and everyone congratulating us on the baby and the wedding. I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful day. Everything was perfect. If this was a dream, I didn’t want to ever wake up.

We left a little early, letting everyone else keep partying—Morgan promised he’d make sure everyone cleaned up afterwards. I got tired easily with the pregnancy, and I told Pike that he could stay if he wanted, but he insisted on coming with me. “I want to spend today with you,” he told me. “There’ll be plenty of time for us to go and do separate things over the years. But this is our wedding night.”

I hugged Mom and Dad, said goodbye to Morgan and Michelle, and then Pike helped me to the car to get us home.

To my surprise, however, we weren’t driving towards the garage. Pike still lived in the apartment above, since he could oversee everything that way, and although I had been spending a lot of my time there, I hadn’t officially moved in with him. We’d still been working out the logistics of everything.

But… this wasn’t the way there at all. Were we staying at my parents’ house for the evening? That couldn’t be right, though. If my parents were going to get kicked out of their own house for a night they might as well have paid for a hotel room for us, instead.
