He doesn’t speak for a long while and my stomach twists with anxiety. I’m not sure if he’s angry with me or not, but the way he’s gripping the steering wheel tells me he may be angry. Or frustrated. Perhaps both.

“So, what is this event we’re going to?” I finally ask because I can’t take the quiet anymore. It would’ve probably been easier if the stereo was on, but I can’t deal with a man who’s stoically silent.

“The men are auctioning off slaves,” he tells me which has my stomach dropping to my feet.

“What?”

“It’s an auction for women.” Crow doesn’t look at me, but his expression is severe. “I need to meet with someone who’ll be in attendance. We have intel these men will know when your father is going to arrive in the country.”

“These are the Bratva connections?”

“They are,” he tells me with a nod.

I turn my attention to the window, taking in the darkness which greets me. The sun set hours ago, and now the sky is black, I can’t see much of the countryside. We’re nowhere near a city, so I wonder where the party is. Perhaps there are homes along the way, but as we speed through the windy streets, I don’t see any lights other than the headlamps of the vehicle.

No one passes us as we take the turns far too quickly for my liking, but I don’t say anything to Crow. His focus is on the road, and I want to ask more questions, but I don’t. The fear of him selling me off takes a hold, and it’s the only thing I can think of as we make our way through the darkness.

I thought I was nervous before, but now, I’m downright scared of what the night holds.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

CROW

She’s nervous. It emanates through the small space of the car, twisting around me like a goddamned ribbon of light. I should put her mind at ease, but it’s what a nice guy would do. I’m not a nice person. I rather enjoy her unease. It makes me want to rip the fucking dress off her body and show her how owned she is.

I may not be able to voice my desires, but I can certainly show her with actions. She doesn’t realize how much I want her. I didn’t until Falcon pointed it out. He frustrates me when he tries to read into me. I love fucking and I enjoy fucking this girl who seems to have taken over our lives.

Never once did I think I would keep her safe. That I would want to keep her safe, but I do. Perhaps it’s because she is as innocent as we were, like the kids her father stole, her father abused. Those were the children who did nothing to deserve what they got. But I’ll ensure her dad gets exactly what he deserves.

The thought of finally ending him is the only reason I’m going to this party tonight. The men who will be in attendance are vile creatures. They all deserve to die. If I wasn’t outnumbered, even with my brothers, I would have taken them all out. But there are times where you need to turn the other cheek. Tonight is one of those.

The time will come where they will all pay for their sins.

I may not be innocent in everything I do, but there are limits. I have morals. Even if some may think I don’t.

“So,” Lucille starts, her voice breaking with nervous energy. “This auction,” she says. “It’s all women?”

“Virgins,” I throw out, ensuring she calms the fuck down. I would have loved to have had her nervous all night, but I need her focused on the task at hand.

“Oh.” The soft whisper she breathes does things to me and I have to shift in my seat, my hand ensuring my bulge isn’t obvious. “Do you attend these often?”

“Do I look like I need to pay for some tight pussy?” I grit, casting a glance toward her. The way her cheeks flush at my question has my desire only heating my blood more than before.

“No, I mean, I just meant—”

“If a job calls for something, I do it,” I explain. “It’s the reason I do this. I seek out those who deserve to be killed. I don’t do it on a whim. The men we come across are evil. They will do anything they want because they have the money to pay for it. I don’t believe a woman should be bought or sold. But I do enjoy a woman to obey when it comes to fucking.”

Her questioning gaze turns to me. The heat of it is scorching. Usually, I would hate it, a woman staring at me, but I like her eyes on me. “Is that why you wanted me to work for you?”
