“Please, Chris. There’s nothing left to say. Just go.”

I want to tell her I’m not going fucking anywhere with her in this state, but I don’t deserve to demand anything of her. Especially when I’m the one who hurt her. I grab my keys from the bowl on the counter and, with one last look at Jess, head toward the door. Tears track down her face, and I hate myself in that moment for causing her such pain.

I get to the front door but can’t bring myself to leave. I turn and head back to the kitchen.

“Are you okay?” I shake my head. “I mean, obviously you’re not okay. But, Jess, can I do something for you? Call someone?”

She shakes her head as tears continue to track down her face.

I want to go to her. To hold her, to tell her it will be okay, but it won’t, so I remain where I am. “I’m so fucking sorry, Jess.” The words nearly suffocate me when they leave my mouth.

“I know,” she manages through her sobs. “Me too.”
