Chapter Thirty-Three

Sophie

Waking up, I opened my eyes to see Cole, Tibby, Drake, and Paul standing in a hospital room. It was dark, and they all looked worried and tired. Looking to my left, I could see the heart monitor screens and I heard one constant beeping sound. A band was wrapped around my stomach, and I had an IV in my arm.

Cole reached down and grabbed my hand. “Hi,” his soft voice filled the room.

Taking in the situation, I saw the doctor walking in, and I started to sit up. “Miss Dash, I’m Doctor Cook.”

He walked to the other side of my bed that Cole was not on and looked at the monitors. I tried forming the words, but my voice felt feeble, as if it was just air that I could breathe out. I mouthed, “What happened?”

The doctor looked at his clipboard. “You had some abnormal bleeding and passed out due to the pain. We provided you with some medication until we can run some additional tests.”

Not getting the answer I wanted, he clicked a button on the monitor, and through a speaker came the sound of a fast heartbeat.

Looking in Cole’s direction, I saw his eyes pooling up. “The baby is fine, but we need to find out why your body is reacting this way.”

My face shined with joy as I heard the fast sound that was strong and lively. My eyes were filled with tears of joy, and Cole embraced me hard.

The Doctor continued, “We will be back shortly, but I am going to place you as a high-risk pregnancy, so you will need to eliminate as much stress as possible.”

Tibby snorted but stopped as I shot her a glare. “Maybe I’ll start with my driver first.” I grumbled before Doctor Cook made his way out the door.

“You wouldn’t be able to navigate yourself to the bathroom if it wasn’t for me, so good luck finding someone else.” Tibby was right, and most of all irreplaceable. And she knew it.

For the next few hours, Drake, Paul, Tibby, Cole, and I shared stories about one another. I laughed so much that the monitor shifted on my stomach. This was my family, and I never felt so complete in life. Paul announced, “Well, I’m starving and hate hospital food, so I’m going to go grab us something.” Tibby and Drake followed, and Cole and I were left in the room alone.

He stood there all handsome wearing the suit pants and white button-down from the meeting the day before. It just hit me that he didn’t have a change of clothes at my apartment. He sat next to me on the bed and kissed me. His wet lips made me feel safe, and I pulled away, cupping his face. “Cole, I love you.”

He kissed me again like he had been waiting for those words to be confirmed. “I love you more,” he whispered, and without hesitation, I countered with, “I love you most.” It was a new day, new life, and it was everything I needed.
