He’s right about my empty threat, but I can’t admit it. Instead, I shrug. “We can’t leave her behind now because she’s seen us.” Before I can say anything else, there’s a rumble vibrating through the air. We each go motionless at the sound. I look at each of them, explaining, “Containment crew. The fight is over and now they’re looking for everyone who ran.”

Quin grins at us. “Time for Operation Twisty Route?”

“Wait,” S’Tou says, holding up a hand. “Hear that?”

We listen and I enhance my hearing. They’re using broadcasters at the crash site. I try to pick out words, running them through the few translators I have in my system, but nothing. “A few of the words sound similar to the Earther’s, probably trying to lure her and everyone else back.”

“They should go,” Quin says. “Leave us alone.”

“I agree,” I say, gathering the Earther in my arms. “Nilt’s right. Twisty route it is. Last one there is a slarka’s dinner.” After making sure I have a good hold on the Earther, she shifts a little as if trying to get comfortable. I look down at her while the other take off in three different directions, grateful they’ve given me the most direct path back.

“Come on, Earther. Let’s go home,” I tell her and begin walking. As I pick my way over the roots and rain-slicked dead leaves, I regret not slinging her over my shoulder like a bag of animal feed. Nothing’s saying I couldn’t even now, but the action would cause her more pain.

Not that I mind how she feels, but I don’t want to listen to her whine. So, feeling for solid footholds among the jutting roots it is. A stream I’m familiar with lies ahead. Even though I enjoy being clean, I don’t want a dunking in the frigid water. I hold the Earther close, taking a couple of steps back to leap over the water.

99% DNA match detected. Accept match? my internal system says as her scent swirls through my olfactory senses. A sharp hunger for her hits me in my dick.

I stare down at her, crossing the stream pushed to the back of my mind. This can’t be happening. Recalculate, I reply.

I thought maybe one of the other men would cause trouble by claiming her but never considered my old, worn out system would. No. Delete match.

Are you certain?

I can’t believe my system is bikking arguing with me. But then, I glance down at the Earther’s face. She’s frowning. And, so exquisitely beautiful, my heart almost hurts. No, I’m not certain. Delay match.
