I frown at Cinq. “He means a going away present, doesn’t he?”

“No,” he admits. “All this is a consolation prize from my family. They wanted me out of the way but not dead.”

I swear to everything holy I’m not mercenary, but a guy whose family can gift a solar system? I should have accepted that match thing from day one. Cinq laughs and my face burns as I confess, “So you can still read expressions, huh?”

“Avarice is pretty easy to spot, love.”

Putting my fingertips to my hot cheeks, I give him a grin. “Sorry, but an entire planet? If I knew this was yours, I’d never have suggested you leave.” I stop trying to cool my skin and look down at the table. “I might stop talking since I suppose anything now would seem disingenuous.”

“You could try.”

I laugh. “I will, when we’ve found somewhere nicer to live.” Hoping to refocus everyone, I lean over to look at Cinq’s datapad. “How much do we know about our ride? Is she trustworthy? And are you sure you want to give up a planet?”

“Considering she’s Aard’s sister?” Cinq sighs and hands Nilt the datapad. “Not completely but she’s our only option. And what’s a planet worth to me if you’re not here to share it?”

Nilt begins reading with a frown. “She’ll be here in eight days?”

“Taking the long way, I guess,” Quin offers with a casual shrug.

Cinq stretches. “Good. We’ll have more time to pack.”

“I think I know why she’s taking the long way,” Nilt says, still frowning. “Look.” He turns the datapad toward Cinq. “She’s wanted for theft and murder.”

Taking the pad, Cinq glares at the screen. “Bikking pless it all. The assassination is alleged, but still. The thieving isn’t.” He looks up at me, then the two. “Are you sure you want to leave here with her? We can always wait until someone less murderous is available.”
