And that’s what Alexis constantly feels. She wakes up to a struggle, hustles all day, and goes to bed worrying about tomorrow. She has no safe space like I do with my family. She’s all alone.

I return to the bedroom to find her under the blankets, pretending to sleep. I climb in next to her and cuddle against the back of her soft body.

“I’m too pushy,” I whisper in her ear.

“Is that why you were gone so long?”

“I was so busy thinking about the last five years of my life without you that I never imagined what those five years without me were like.”

“High school wasn’t easy.”

Grinning at her snarky armor, I kiss her ear. “If you want to sleep, we can. But it’s only nine, so maybe we could find something you like to watch on the TV. I could get us food delivered.”

Alexis frowns at me over her shoulder. “You’re always hungry.”

“Jizzing so much burned a lot of calories.”

“I’m probably already pregnant. We should start thinking names,” Alexis says, and I sense she’s trying to rattle me.

“I like short names.”

“I’m not a good speller, either.”

Grinning, I reach for my phone. “I’ll look for food. You can search names. Then, we’ll pick something to watch.”

“Penny wants me to double my days at her place,” Alexis says as she checks her messages. “I’m apparently cool right now, so she wants to milk my talents before people get bored.”

“Makes sense, but four days is too much.”

“Four hours per day is barely part time.”

“We’ll see how this schedule feels after a week. If you want fewer hours, I’ll bully Penny into backing off.”

Alexis wants to complain. I feel her considering whether to share her feelings. Rather than talking about her job, she asks, “Is anyone in your family named ‘Ace’?”

“Ace Mercer would be the hottest guy in town.”

“Unless he’s a ginger.”

“No, he’ll just stand out that way. My family’s swimming in hotties. Our kid will need to rock something special to make his mark.”

As Alexis searches girl names, I locate a food source that doesn’t involve me putting on my pants.

Tumbling Rock shuts down around nine. Delivery is impossible after eight. But Rockwell offers a few fast-food places still open. After putting in my order, I roll over and look at the names Alexis scrolls through. We decide Bette is a solid girl choice.

“My uncle cried at the end of ‘Beaches,’” I tell Alexis. “Our baby girl’s name will give me an excuse to bring that up a lot.”

“Which uncle?”

“Donovan. He’s sensitive.”

“Are you sure it wasn’t just something in his eye? Gary had that problem during ‘Field of Dreams.’”

Grinning, I kiss her and instigate another round of hot sticky fun. We’re both out of breath by the time the guy arrives with the food. I wrap a blanket around my waist and grab my order.

Soon, “South Park” plays while we sit at the table. Alexis has never experienced the wonders of my family’s favorite show. Tomorrow, she’ll meet the people who made me the overly confident and always amazing sumbitch I am today.

Sure, the homestead residents will give her shit. Alexis will pretend they’re hugging her with mean words. All while I bask in the beauty of having my favorite people and dream girl in one place.
