“I don’t get it.”

“Like you take a journey and go west. It’s that saying.”

Alexis frowns in the most beautiful way. “What saying?”

“Go west, young man.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. Well, back then, there was a lot of land out west.”

“And these people were too good for West Virginia, were they? Hey, I guess you could be named for the part of Virginia we live in.”

“No, it’s that thing I said.”

“Okay,” she replies and chomps down on her salad.

I find her shovel-style eating method quite sexy. Like she’s in a race to eat before the food escapes her fork.

“So, your family never said I asked about you?”

“Well, here’s the thing,” she says and leans across the table as if sharing a secret. “I do vaguely remember them claiming a creepy loser was stalking me. But that couldn’t be you. I mean, you’re not at all creepy or a loser. No, it must have been someone else.”

“They just don’t like me.”

“How come? Is it your hair? Because I was just talking to my cousin Boy Robin, and he claimed thin hair was hot on men. Like really in vogue with the highfalutin fashion types. Now, I don’t know nothing about avant-garde style, but I told him that the thin hair thing was dumb. Everyone should have as much hair as possible to prepare for a brutal winter. But he delusionally held strong to his ‘thin hair is sexy’ stance. Now, here you are with your thick head of hair. I bet hair envy is why they don’t like you.”

If Alexis wasn’t smiling and her eyes didn’t shine with mild horniness, I’d think she was screwing with me. But maybe she can’t help seeming subtly hostile. She is a Toomey by blood on her dad’s side. That’s the part kicking me in the balls. However, her mom’s side has me smitten and ready for marriage.

“Well, I asked about you,” I insist and frown at my salad.

“Was I mean to you that day? My lady issues can make me just abhorrent.”

“You were beautiful,” I murmur, admiring how she’s still the loveliest woman I’ve ever seen.

“I bet you were super handsome.”

“But you don’t remember?”

“Nope. Sorry, but I’ll remember you after today.”

I probably look like a fricking moron as I sit across from Alexis, staring at her as if I’ve never seen a girl before. But I can’t believe she’s real and within reach. Finally, I remember how I can ask her questions since she isn’t just a figment of my imagination.

“How long will you be in Tumbling Rock this time?” I ask, feeling uneasy like I need to throw her over my shoulder and run away to where she can’t escape.

“Oh, I’m living here now.”

Unable to hide my pure fricking joy, I throw up my arms in triumph and ask, “Since when?”

“Since three days ago.”

“Are you staying with those relatives of yours?”

“Sorta,” she says and shrugs her sexy, freckled shoulders. “Two out-of-town cousins moved here and got a place. They offered me their couch. Couldn’t say no to such an opportunity.”

“Wait, which cousins are these?”

“Zelda and Juno from Butte Hills.”
