She said yes.

I stand bringing her up with me and twirl her in my arms.

I was so nervous trying to pull this moment off and the weight of that rolls off my shoulders and all I feel is relief and immense joy.

“I have another surprise,” I whisper into her neck.

She bears back and looks at me.

“Really?”

The glow of happiness that she is wearing makes my heart skip.

“Yep, let’s get packed up and head to the truck.”

We gather our things and strip out of our waders.

I drive us to my parent’s home sitting on top of the mountain overlooking the valley.

Our friends and family are waiting inside to help us celebrate.

As we exit the truck, Caleb, who was standing on the front porch, comes running to us.

“What are you doing here? I thought you were still in Chicago?” she cries, as he embraces her.

“Nope. We tricked you. I flew home this morning and Granna picked me up at the airport,” he tells her, then takes her hand and leads us toward the house.

“Come on. SaraBeth and Granna made us dinner.”

He opens the door and as Taeli steps over the threshold, he begins to giggle.

“Surprise!”

Everyone begins to shout and cheer as we enter the kitchen. Langford slaps me on the back and each of my brothers shakes my hand. Leona takes Taeli’s face in her hands before hugging her daughter tightly and giving me a wet wink over her shoulder.

The girls grab Taeli and pull her toward the sunroom to admire the ring. I watch as they gush over the jewelry and start snapping photos. Then I walk over to the island and kiss my mother’s cheek as she and Pop fret over her phone.

“Thank you for this, Mom.”

“You’re welcome,” she says, as she looks to me. I see the crease on her brow and step closer.

“What’s going on?” I ask as my eyes meet Pops.

He turns the phone screen to me.

“Looks like Garrett is heading home,” he says.

What kind of trouble has my wayward brother gotten himself into now?
