“No.” His hands lifted in innocence. “I get it. The house is crowded enough as it is.”

“Right. So...”

He just stared at her. And I watched the expression change on her face as my offer jumped up like the elephant in the room. Her gaze shot to me.

“Seriously?”

“Hope’s is too far,” I reminded her. “Especially if you’re gonna be helping Grace every day now.”

“A bachelor pad above a tattoo shop?” Her tone dripped with acid.

“Hey! Don’t knock it till you try it.”

She sighed heavily and I knew we had her.

Faith stormed outahead of me with Lance in tow.

Mateo gave me a little head shake and clapped a hand to my shoulder. “Stay by your phone.”

I nodded and headed out, knowing I’d have to pay the piper next with my big brother. But first, I had to deal with a rather feisty blonde.

She spun on me the moment I pushed outside the station, where she had Lance at a little patch of grass. “I don’t know what you two think you’re up to, conspiring together like that without me, but—”

I strode right up to her, forked my hands through her short waves, and yanked her into my chest. Swallowing her startled gasp with my lips, I crashed into her mouth, swallowing her whole.

Fuck it all to hell. The woman could drive me crazy, but I’d been vibrating with need since the moment she’d begged me to touch her in that motel room. Since I’d felt her against me, sunk my fingers into her soft curves, inhaled her. Tasted her. And now that I knew I was still a free man of sorts, I was nearly drunk with relief. I was insane with it.

She moaned into my mouth as I dipped my tongue to taste her, her fingers clawing at my skull. She may fight me relentlessly, but she could never deny her body’s reaction to mine. Together, we were gasoline poured on a dying flame, a spark of fire given a breath of oxygen. Pure combustion.

I changed the angle of the kiss and our teeth clanked in our desperation to get closer. Her tongue slid along mine, mimicking the movement of our lovemaking from so long ago. I ground my erection into her belly, groaning loudly into her mouth. Fuck, I wanted her. I knew she wanted me.

Eventually, I drew back, my forehead pressed to hers, my fingers still tangled in her hair, our breaths raging between us. “Faith,” I breathed her name, hoping she’d hear in my voice that I’d never conspire to hurt her.

“You make it hard to be mad at you when you do things like that,” she whispered.

A smile teased my lips as I kissed the tip of her nose. “My devious plan worked.”

She pulled away from me, her body language pulling away even further as she fought to put her walls back up. “I don’t like this.”

Thiscould’ve been anything. The weather. The day. The tension between us. But I knew what she meant. What her life had become and the independence she’d lost through no fault of her own.

“I know,” I said. “But it’s only temporary.” I waited until she looked up at me with those amazing eyes. “Just until Mateo gives the all clear for you to go home.”

“Who knows how long that’ll be?”

“True.” I tapped her chin with a finger. “But we both know he’s working on it.” I held up both hands. “And, hey... it could be fun.”

“Fun,” she deadpanned. “Right,” she said, turning and striding away.

I caught up to her with a couple big steps. “So...” She ignored me. “I need to go talk to Tobias.” She shot me a look but kept walking. “Faith.”

She turned back with an exasperated look. “What?”

I held my arms out in question. “Where are you marching off to?”

She closed her eyes, shaking her head minimally. She looked exhausted. “I don’t know, Adam. Anywhere.”

I waited a moment, then walked slowly to meet her. “Want me to take you by your place to grab some stuff first? Or do you want to do that later?”
