Hayden liked to be prepared, after all.

It was a small miracle it still worked at all and nobody had stumbled upon it and stolen it or siphoned the gas.

Anna sighed dramatically before pulling open the passenger side door and hopping in. “I guess this is better than walking the entire way.” She settled into the seat as Hayden put the vehicle, an old jeep that was missing its roof, into drive and pulled off toward the nearest road. “The less time I have to spend with you, the better.”

Hayden rolled his eyes, unable to stop himself. “Don’t pretend that you don’t enjoy my company, Anna.” Her animosity was cute, but very, very misguided.

“Pretend? You’re kidding, right?” She raised her brows, but he didn’t respond. “You can’t seriously think I enjoy spending time with you.”

Again, he kept his mouth shut. There was no use arguing with her. She didn’t seem ready to stop fighting, though.

“The first time I met you, you held a gun to my head—"

“And then I let you go, safely, despite the fact that you were an enemy soldier.” She always left that part out.

“The second time, you lured me out under false pretenses and forced me to help you—”

He cut her off again. “Forced? Please, tell me how I forced you.” There was no gun to her head, no threat looming over her. He’d told her that her friend was in danger, and she offered her help. And that hadn’t even been a lie. Julia really was in danger.

She snapped her mouth shut. “How about you handcuffing me to that damn pipe in your room?”

A roll of his shoulder. “That was out of necessity.”

She forced out a laugh. “I don’t know what drugs you’re on, but I can assure you, I do not enjoy being around you. At all.”

Words, words, words. He’d seen the way she looked at him last night, when he’d changed his shirt in front of her. He didn’t have to change at all, but he had a theory and tested it. As much as she may have thought she’d hidden it, Hayden saw the lust that flashed across her features. “Your mouth says one thing, but your eyes say another.”

Anna’s mouth fell open. For a moment, he thought he may have stunned her into silence. “Just because I find you aesthetically pleasing doesn’t mean I like any other part of you.”

“Ah,” he nearly grinned, but kept his expression schooled. “So you do find me aesthetically pleasing.” He was flattered.

“Go to hell,” she barked back.

He was still internally grinning from her earlier admission. “You know, you’re welcome to touch if you’d like.” Now that there were no handcuffs to stop her.

“The only part of me that will be touching you is my fist.”

He shrugged. “Sounds kinky.”

She glared at him, but said nothing else. Normally, he’d be fine with that silence, but with Anna, he found himself wanting to hear more. “You stole my device. The same one that you helped bring to me in the first place. Tell me why.” That seemed like a good starting point.

He may have known her goal, killing Greene, a man Hayden knew all too well, but he had no idea what her actual plan was. Obviously, he hadn’t brought the communication device with him, and Anna seemed unbothered by that fact.

“I took it to get intel, obviously.”

“What type of intel?”

More silence spread between them. It was unusual for Anna to be so… quiet. Unless… “You don’t have a plan at all, do you?”

“Of course I have a plan.” She stared at him indignantly. “Screw you.”

He kept his voice low, calm. “Tell me the plan, then.”

“I’m not telling you shit.” Even with his eyes on the road ahead, Hayden could feel the way she seethed beside him.

He kept his own mouth shut, recognizing her reaction for what it was.

There was no plan. And trying to take out a high-ranking UNR official with no plan? That reeked of a desperation Hayden never expected from careful, clever Anna. What had pushed her to grow so frantic in carrying out this revenge plot?
