She smirked. “What a threat.” That sounded like a gift to her. No more questions for the night? Yes please.

He rolled one shoulder back. “We can talk more in the morning. Maybe you’ll be more pliant then.”

Yeah, right. But if that’s what he wanted to think? Sure. She’d be a little angel in the morning. So long as he left her alone for the next few hours. “So, when will dinner be served? Do I get to sleep in the bed? How about a bathroom break.”

Hayden’s cool gaze landed on her own, and for a moment, he did nothing but stare at her. Then he cleared his throat. “No dinner. No bed. No bathroom.”

“Uh, excuse me?”

He scoffed. “You’re a prisoner, Anna.”

Fury boiled up into her throat, but she managed to swallow it down before she started spewing it at him. “So you’re just going to leave me here all night, tied up in your damn room?”

“Yep.”

“I’ll piss on your floors, then.”

Hayden just shrugged. “I’m not awfully attached to them.”

She saw red. “Let me the hell out!”

He was in front of her in a second, his face only inches from her own. She froze, noticing immediately the anger that blotted his eyes. The rest of him was the same emotionless, robotic Hayden that she’d come to know, but his eyes? They always told the full story. And he was pissed.

“I want to help you, Anna. I want to trust that you’re not going to run out there without a plan and get yourself killed. But I can’t do that if you don’t tell me what the fuck you’re up to.” His voice was low and lethal, the curse sounding odd on his usually cordial tongue.

Ha. As if anyone would help her. If Anna knew anything at all with utter certainty, it was that she was on her own. Nobody wanted to help, not really. They only wanted you for what they could gain, and then you were discarded. Not to mention she’d had a plan, and a great one at that, until he’d pranced in and ruined it.

But fine. He wanted to play hero? She’d let him. “I was planning on killing somebody.”

“Who?”

“Joseph Greene.” She paused, licking her lips, hating the way his name tasted on her tongue. “He’s the Intelligence Director for the UNR.” There were a few more people she’d planned to take out, but he was her number one target. The one that kept her up at night.

Hayden squinted at her for a moment before finally asking, “why? What did he do?”

Anna’s lips straightened into a line. She’d say no more. She already gave him far more than she’d wanted to.

He stood, stepping back and slowly pacing at the foot of his bed. Several minutes went by as her thoughts raced. Did Hayden know the man? Did he know what he did? Did that knowledge mean that he knew her greatest secrets? She sure as hell hoped not.

After too many painful minutes had passed, he finally stopped, glancing her way. “I’ll help you.”

The thud of her heart in her throat was loud. Did he hear it, too? “You’ll help me what?”

“Hunt him.” He took three steps forward. “Find him.” He squatted down in front of her, putting him closer to her eye level. “Kill him.” His cold, hard expression, for the first time since she’d met him, sent a chill of fear through her spine.

And that said a lot, being that their first interaction involved him holding a gun to her head.

She swallowed down the lump in her throat. “And why would you do that?”

He simply stood and shrugged, turning his back toward her. “Your enemy is my enemy, no?”

Well, put like that, it sounded fairly simple. Nothing was that simple though. He was her enemy. Everyone was her enemy. Didn’t he understand that?

No. Of course he didn’t. For all of his scars and old battle wounds, Hayden still had a family. He had his brothers, who, while not related to him by blood, would easily spill it to protect him. He had people who looked up to him, admired him, respected him. Feared him.

He would never understand the hell that she lived in, day after day. And that was fine, good for him. She wouldn’t wish her personal hell on anybody.

Well… maybe on one person. One person who her least favorite Resistance member would apparently be helping her find, and kill.
