“Smile,” he said, turning his front camera on and angling it so it caught both of us and Cosette.

I chuckled, and he snapped the picture. Why he wanted a picture with me and Cosette was a mystery to me. Then he kissed my cheek and took another one.

“New profile pic,” he explained. “Can I hold her?”

I smiled and handed Cosette to him. He held her carefully, making sure to support her back legs like I’d shown him.

And then he kissed the top of her head, and he had to mop a puddle of Kyler off the floor. Maybe it was stupid that his wanting to bond with her meant so much to me, but it showed me that he accepted me for me. He accepted every part of what made me who I was, and being Cosette’s mom was a huge part of that.

“You’re going to have to get used to me, Cosette,” he murmured as he stroked her fur. “Because I’m going to be around here a lot. Hope that’s okay.” His eyes widened for a second, and then he chuckled. “Did she just lick me?”

I giggled. “Yeah. Bunnies lick people just like dogs do, but they don’t do it as easily. She must really like you and trust you.”

He kissed her head again. “Right back at you, Cosette.”

My eyes stung, and I had to blink back tears. Ian put Cosette back in her cage, and I closed it and then turned around and kissed him. I couldn’t think of any other way to tell him how much I appreciated the way he treated both of us.

And as he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close, deepening the kiss, another little bit of the wall I’d built around my heart crumbled away as I wondered if maybe, just maybe, he was really as sweet as he seemed to be.
