Chapter Two

“What do you mean you’ve met a guy?”

Derek didn’t like the tone in Matthew’s voice. It wasn’t like they were still dating. Matthew Brown, a successful attorney at a neighboring law firm had dropped over to bring some papers for him to sign. “Just what it sounds like.”

“Maybe I should rephrase the question,” the tall, blue-eyed blond hunk said. “Where did you meet this guy? You’re either here or at home.”

Derek frowned. Matthew’s arrogant attitude was one of the reasons why they had broken up. “I met him in a park yesterday where I’d taken Jaden for a little outing. He came up and took our picture.”

Matthew scowled at him. “A stalker?”

Derek shook his head. “No, a photojournalist forToday’s Baby Magazine. He wants to do a story on Jaden and me.”

Matthew sat across from Derek in one of the Queen Anne chairs. His briefcase sat open on the matching chair next to it.

“What kind of story?”

Derek knew he should have discussed this with Matthew before he did the interview, but everything happened so fast. “A story about me being a single parent and raising Jaden.”

“Let me guess, the guy is cute?”

Derek nodded. “Super cute.”

Matthew cleared his throat. “I thought so. And he already knows about Jaden, so you’ve killed two birds with one stone.”

“Yes, or filled two requests on my wish list.”

“Does he know what you do for a living?”

“Sort of,” Derek answered. “I told him I worked in pharmaceuticals.”

“You own the damn business,” Matthew said. “And you’re responsible for hundreds of employees.”

Derek smiled weakly. “That part he doesn’t know.”

“That’s a very important detail,” Matthew said. “He might be the type of guy that will get an inferiority complex from dating a guy richer than he is.”

“Or the opposite, he might be the type that will spend my money like there’s no tomorrow.” Derek hadn’t had that problem with Matthew because he was from a successful family of lawyers and politicians.

“What type do you think he is?” Matthew asked.

Derek shrugged. “I’ve only known him for a day. He’s a terrific kisser though.”

Matthew sat up straight in his chair. “You’ve kissed him already. I don’t know if I like that.”

Derek rocked back in his executive chair and chuckled. “We aren’t together anymore, remember? You have Chaz now.” Chaz Ormond was Matthew’s legal clerk and his new live-in lover.

“I still care about you and don’t want you to end up with some kind of kook.”

“Chance is not a kook.”

“Is that his name?” Matthew asked.

“Yes, Chance Richards, and he likes working with babies.”

“Working with them and raising them are two different things, Derek.”

Derek scowled. The real reason he and Matthew weren’t together anymore was because Matthew liked to party and didn’t want a ready-made family. Matthew ending their relationship didn’t hurt as much now, and he was Jaden’s godfather. He brought Jaden lots of toys, but the two of them had no other bond. “I know, but I won’t find out what type he is unless I give him a chance.”
