But she needed to stay far, far away from that forest. She couldn’t trust anyone. But, at least Balfor had kept his word. And he had lied to the others to get her out. Why would he want to drag her back in now?

Checking her watch, she realized it was almost one o’clock. She could give her office a call soon. Glancing at the rest of the food left in front of her, she flagged her cheerful waiter and asked for a box.

Pulling out her phone, she frowned as she saw the blinking notifications, reminding her that Nick had reached out.

Swiping down, she clicked on his name to see what was going on.

She had two missed calls and a couple of voicemails.

Hey Nayome, it’s Nick. Sorry to call you out of the blue like this. I came across something of yours while I was unpacking some old boxes; I thought you might want it back. Anyway, call me when you can. It would be great to catch up.

Hi, me again. If you’re not interested, just let me know. I get it. But your phone is going straight to voicemail, which is strange. I’ll try again soon. Let me know you’re alright.

Nayome deleted the messages, irritated. What could he possibly have found of hers that would be worth seeing his two-timing, sleazy face in person? And wasn’t it just great that of all people, Nick had been the only one to voice any concern about her mysterious disappearance and dead cell phone? Pathetic.

I really need to get a life.
