Chapter 10

“Hi, Carol?”

“Speaking!”

“It’s Nayome. Can you put me through to James?”

“Sure thing Nayome.”

A few beeps sounded as she transferred the call.

“James speaking.”

“James, it’s me.”

“Nayome! Great to hear you’re back. How did everything go?”

“Fine. I heard you got the message. That I spent an extra day out of service?”

“Yeah, we got your message from the park office. Nice of you to send that along. We would have worried when you missed the team call yesterday.”

“Glad to hear it got passed along. I wasn’t sure the park would pull through,” Nayome said, feeling uncomfortable, not knowing what to say to fish for information.

“They sounded professional enough. Someone named Gabriel. He assured us you were in excellent hands.”

“And you believed him.”

“What!? Nayome is everything alright?”

“Of course, I was just afraid the message would get lost in translation. They have a lot of kids working for them here…so young. I wasn’t sure you would take them seriously.”

“Ah. No, it was all good. He knew about your expedition and explained everything, so it seemed legit.”

“Great.” Nayome closed her eyes, rubbing her temples.

“So, how’s the research coming along?”

“I’ve got some interesting samples, I’m excited to run them.”

“Excellent. Well, we will be happy to have you back.”

“James, I was wondering. If I secure an earlier flight—”

“Nayome!” James cut her off. “Nonsense. Enjoy your last few days in Scotland. I insist. You hardly ever take a break, you could use the r&r.”

“But if I got something, would there be any issue if I transferred the flight? It’s on the corporate card—”

“Nayome. I know you’re excited to get back to work, but I absolutely refuse to let you come back early. You’ve earned this extra time. Take it, see some sights. Scotland is beautiful this time of year.”

What could she say that wouldn’t make James suspicious something was up?

“Thanks boss.”

James chuckled. “We are excited to have you back, but I better not see your face before Tuesday next week.”

“Roger that.”

“Take care Nayome.”
