“I’m coming with you,” Mary said.

“Don’t be silly,” Parker shot back. “You know you’ll just hurt yourself.”

“I know how to take care of myself,” Mary replied coolly. She stared at Daisy for a moment, seemingly wanting to say something but holding it back. Daisy wanted to say something herself. She wanted to tell Mary she understood now. She knew why Mary was angry at Daisy all the time, just as Daisy knew why she was angry at Mary.

They cared deeply for each other. Always had.

Parker gave his mate an exasperated look, but Alice only shrugged. “We’re exhausted. We need all the help we can get.”

“Then get me something to wear, too,” Daisy returned.

Both Mary and Parker tried to refuse her, but she shot back, “If Mary goes, I go.”

Mary lifted her chin. “And I won’t go without Daisy.”

Alice said, “Fine with me.”

“Women,” Parker cursed and stormed off.

The smile on Daisy’s face was the first she’d shared with Mary. One of many, she hoped.
