I get into the car and call Liam. “Morning. Has anyone got eyes on Sophie’s mother? I thought she would have called when she got home, but Sophie didn’t mention it, and now I am wondering if she was in on the attempted kidnap.”

“Erm, good morning to you too. Kiera is watching the mother. She did go home to Muff. Kiera hasn’t seen anyone with her since her friend dropped her off. I don’t know if she made calls, but Kiera has seen no one.”

“Why didn’t you tell me last night that Kiera was watching her mother?” I growl.

“Honestly, I kind of forgot after I got punched and stabbed.” Liam grits out, “I am trying to help, and I want to find who is behind this as much as you.”

“I know. Right, get up. Day has started. Speak soon.”

And I hang up before Liam can grumble something else at me. But it is true, the day has started. Next, I call Marco, he is head of the Italians.

“Good morning, Marco.” I put my work voice on as head of the Irish family.

“Buongiorno, Cahill. What do I owe the pleasure?” He answers in his thick Italian accent. I can hardly make him out. Ruairi is usually with me when I talk to them to make sure I don’t miss anything, but I will have to do this alone today. I need to protect the woman in my life.

“I am having a little problem and I need your help. I am willing to give you two shipments to dock in my port for your assistance with the issue.”

I am grinding my teeth as I say it because I don’t want to give up my dock to these punks, but I need their help.

“I have heard you have been having a little difficulty lately over some girl, and Northern Irish groups. What do you need us to do? I am not agreeing yet. I want to know what the job entails.” Always the businessman, Marco.

“I am re-launching the casino this weekend. I would like more security in case anything was to go down. I am fucking hoping nothing happens, but I can’t be sure. And if one of your guys could keep a close eye on one of my men… I think he might be helping the rival,” I say, defeated. No one likes a rat in his or her camp.

“Would the said person be Jonathon?” How the fuck does he know? Is Jonathon working with the Italians too? Are they after me? Have I wrongly been blaming Sophie’s father all along? I didn’t think I missed the signs.

“What makes you say that, Marco?” I growl down the line. I am super pissed off.

“We all know who your woman is, she is stunning, no-one is after her within the families, but she is your weakness. Yesterday there was attempt to kidnap her…”

“Yes, your point?”

“One of my men saw Jonathon hold the gun on her and walk her toward a blue car. He said it was a shitty car, he didn’t even know the make, and knew the plates were false, so didn’t get them. He didn’t intervene because another man in a white car showed up, packing heat, it was one of your men, and they got away. Jonathon took off when he saw the car. My man did try to catch up, he has a thing about hurting women, but was too slow to see where he went. He only told me in case something came back that he was there.”

“Why was he there, Marco?”

I am fuming, if Marco is telling the truth, I need to deal with Jonathon sooner rather than later, but I also need to work out what the Italians are up to.

“Personal matter.”

“Fuck off, Marco. Tell me why your man was there, or I am going to start thinking you have something to do with this and were approaching my men!” I scream down the phone.

“He has family working there, Cahill. This goes no further. He likes to check in with them. They don’t know him. They see him as a customer only. Are you happy?”

I needed to know. But I won't let that go any further. He is not the head of the family, and he hasn’t done anything wrong, if anything, he even tried to help.

“Tell your man I say thank you for trying. So, are you going to help?”

“Aah, so quick for business.” Marco laughs. “Yes. I will help. I don’t like the innocent getting hurt. Two drops at your port and a free poker night. Deal?”

Seriously, what else can I say, hopefully with the launch I can make more money, and will need it to cover his night of gambling.

“Deal, Marco. We will set up the port nights after the weekend. I hope I won't need to use you or your men.”

“I understand, Cahill, deal it is. I will be in touch. See you this weekend.Arrivederci.” He hangs up. Right, I got two things done. Good morning so far. As I walk into the warehouse, I can hear Ruairi shouting at someone.

“Get out of my sight before you don’t have bloody eyes to see with!” I see a man scrambling out with a split lip and roughed up clothes.

“Bad morning?” I smirk at Ruairi.
