“The fucker owes me. I will get it. He just needed a reminder of who he is dealing with. What can I do for ya?” He smiles back.

“Kiera is watching Sophie’s mother and she is back in Muff. Italians are going to help us. Two drops at our ports and one free poker night. I don’t think that is bad deal. Also, have you seen or heard from Jonathon?” I try to ask casually. I don’t want to give anything away until I have him myself.

“Jonathon should be at the garage. He hasn’t phoned to tell us anything different. If something has happened to his mother, I am sure we would have heard.” Ruairi replies with a frown on his face. “Do you want me to call the garage to check if he’s there?” I just nod my head. I can bet my left ass cheek he isn’t there, and he won’t be returning. But I will wait for Ruairi to confirm it.

“The bastard hasn’t shown up, and they didn’t think to tell me he had yesterday off. They thought he had taken extra time. Swear to God, I need to bust some skulls today. Fecking eejits!”

Told ya so. I knew the rat wouldn’t show up. But where is he? I call wee Dickie.

“Find me Jonathon. Don’t kill him. But get him to the warehouse, by any means necessary.” I hang up. Wee Dickie doesn’t talk much anyway. He follows orders, and that is all I need. Then my phone rings, “What?”

“Sorry, sir,” wee Dickie says.

“I am at the casino with Sophie. Ruairi isn’t here. Do you want me to leave or wait till Ruairi arrives?”

I didn’t even think of him watching over Sophie, God, glad he had his head on.

“I will go over myself and then you can leave.”

I walk back out of the warehouse and head for the casino. Ruairi has loads on today with debts so I will explain all this to him later. While in the car I decide to call my wee sister, Aoife, I haven’t spoken to her in ages. She answers after one ring.

“Good morning, Sis. How are you and Mam?”

“Morning Bro. Good, good here. How are you? Any craic at home?”

“Nothing fun, Sis. Just working. Oh, I have a girlfriend…”

“Ahhahhhahha, Mam,Mam! Cahil has a girlfriend!”

That’s all I hear before I hear Mam asking a load of quick fire questions, ‘who is she? Where is she from? What is she like? When do I meet her?’. All the usual Mammy questions you get when you tell them you have a girlfriend.

“Ladies, ladies, that’s why I called. Do you fancy coming home for a long weekend? Meet Sophie, see the re-launch of the casino, and spend time with me, as much as I can spare ya?”

“Book the flights, my boy. Aoife, get us packed. Wait… right I will ask. Dear, do Aoife and I need gowns for the casino night thing? I am sure I could miss it, but Aoife won’t,” Mam tells me.

“It’s a formal evening, so a gown would be super, but if you don’t want to go, Mam, I won't make you. Aoife will wanna be there, I know, and I can look after her. It's up to you. Why not pack a gown in case you do want to come?”

“Always a wise one, my boy. Fine. I will. See you both at the airport. Send the details to Aoife. I still can’t work this damn phone of mine.” She laughs, she still hates technology.

“Ok, Mam. Love you both and see you soon.”

I hang up just as I reach the casino. This is turning out to be a very productive day so far, and it’s not even lunch time. Let’s hope wee Dickie can find Jonathon by dinner time, and I will be having an amazing day.

I walk into the casino and see Sophie bossing wee Dickie about to hang balloons and banners. When he spots me, he grins, it’s so wide because he knows he can escape, and this will be my torture from here on in.

“Hey, doll. Wee Dickie needs to go do a job for me, so I will take over from him.” I smile and try to seem excited.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. I have two more days to get this perfect, and then it’s make or break time for me. So, let’s get moving. Does my pretty boy need a gingerbread latte before I make you do some work?” Sophie barks back as she is in boss woman mode and won't take any kind of slack.

I just laugh and roll up my sleeves to await my orders. This is weird. I usually give the orders but it’s always nice to have someone else in charge for a change. Ruairi has told me several times the staff love her because she is firm but fair and always has time for everyone, she listens and tries to fix their problems or at least help, and they love that she isn’t scared of hard work. I was worried they might treat her differently because she is my woman but like the queen, she has earned their respect all on her own. I do what I am told by Soph for a few hours before someone brings lunch from the kitchen. Soph has a toastie and I just have the same.

“By the way, tomorrow morning we need to take a little detour before I drop you off to work.”

Sophie stops eating and looks me dead in the eye. “Why?”

Sometimes I think she thinks I am still going to kill her. I smile and try to look relaxed.

“My mother and sister are flying in for the launch of the casino and both would love to meet you.”
