“You’re fucking kidding me?” She jumps up like I have struck her with a hot poker.

“No, I thought you would be excited to meet them. Did I guess wrong?” I am totally confused. I thought girls loved meeting the family, making our relationship mean something, or some crap like that.

Sophie lets out a long breath. “Any other time I would be over the moon to meet your mother and sister, but this weekend with the launch night, me working like a crazy mad woman, not to even mention the crap going on with my father, so no, Cahill, I am not delighted you have sprung this on me but that’s life. You collect them from the airport and catch up with them. I will meet you all at dinner tomorrow evening. Tomorrow is my last day before the launch, and I want it to be perfect. On launch day I would love to be able to get my hair and nails done, have a facial, get a massage and make up done without coming in here. I want to enjoy the launch night. Please.”

How can I ever say no to her puppy dog eyes?

“Fine, dinner tomorrow evening, but you aren’t getting out of this, doll,” I reinforce. I want her to meet my mam. She will love her, and Aoife will be happy to have another girl around the house to talk to.

We work right into the evening. Before I take Sophie home, I give wee Dickie a quick call. “Well, any word?” I snap.

It’s been hours. He should have something for me, anything.

“Erm, no, sir. I haven’t got him. I am trying every avenue I can. His mother passed away two weeks ago. That’s all the new information I have got. I am trying old houses, hideouts, bars, friends, anything. You know I won’t rest until I have him.”

Wee Dickie is good at his job, and I trust him.

“Fine, just hurry up.”

I hang up as Soph walks to the car to hop in. What a fucking day. Whiskey is what I need, followed by my face between Sophie’s legs, my kind of perfect night.
