“I work in cyber security. There’s a vast job market for good guys who know how to keep the bad guys out.”

Her eyebrow raises as her gaze rakes over me in a new, more interested way. “You’re a professional hacker?”

The last vestiges of my solitude and grief melt away with the smile that cracks my mouth. I lower my voice and gesture toward the parking lot. “Hacking is the least of what I can do. I can make that guy disappear without resorting to violence if you want.”

“Brains over brawn.” She points a finger at me. “I like it.”

My insides quiver at the thought she might like any part of me at all.

“What about you? Where do you want to go to college? What do you want to study?”

Her eyes glaze over with a dreamy quality. “I’d love to escape small town life for the big city. My reach school is NYU, but I have no idea what I want to do with my life.”

“You’re young. You have plenty of time to figure it out.” Even the knowledge that she’s nearly ten years my junior doesn’t deter me from hoping against reason that this could be my promised second chance. I’m in no rush to see where this could lead.

I have all the time in the world.
