“Hey, are you doing okay?”

I nodded, not able to speak. I took a seat by the window, looking outside at the man still standing by the car. His hands were shoved in his pockets, and I wondered if he was feeling the same burning need I was. I gripped the arm rests, my heart thundering out of control.

Get off the plane and go to him.

You want him. Fight for him like he fought for you to stay with him.

My head jerked to the front of the plane when I heard the door slam closed. My heart beat even faster. This was it, my last chance to run to him. I looked back out the window and saw his head hanging, the grief in his shoulders so clear.

“Do you want some champagne?” the stewardess asked.

Get off the plane. Get off the plane. Get off the plane!

“Wally, this is for the best,” Clarissa said sadly, waving away the stewardess. “It would never work.”

But it could. You could find a way. Screw Alexander and his money. Get off the fucking plane and be with the man you love!

I gripped the armrests harder, ready to make my run for it. The engine roared loudly, telling me it was now or never. I was breathing hard now, barely holding it together. I needed him. This wasn’t right. None of this was right.

“If he could have found a way to make it work, he would have,” Clarissa reminded me.

The plane started moving. Tears slipped down my cheeks as I watched him through the window. I opened my mouth, ready to tell the stewardess to stop the plane. I unbuckled my seat belt and squeezed the armrests, and then he looked up at me one last time and gave me a sad smile. And I knew…this was over.

The plane taxied down the runway and I sat back in my seat, breathing hard through the pain of leaving him behind. I closed my eyes, praying I could just pass out and not have to watch the plane leave the ground.

“Miss, you need to buckle your seatbelt.”

I fumbled with the buckle, barely getting it attached before we made the final turn for the runway. I looked out my window once more, watching as he stood by his car across the airfield. And then we were gone.
