My door swung open as Darren held it for me. I unbuckled and stepped out, nodding to Darren.

“Would you like me to wait, sir?”

“Yes.”

Over the past week, Darren was friendly and kind, but right now, he wouldn’t even look at me. He stood staring straight ahead like I was the fucking King and he wasn’t allowed to look at me. God, I could be such a dick.

I tried to pull the door open, but it was locked. Next, I went to the buzzers and tried to figure out which one was hers. There were no names listed, which was good for her, but bad for me. I texted her, asking which apartment she was in, but she never responded, so I called. And called again. And called again.

Finally, she picked up. “What?”

“I’m standing outside. Do you want to let me up?”

“You’re what?”

“I’m standing outside,” I said again, more slowly because I was really fucking pissed.

“Why are you here?”

“Because you’re my wife and you’re supposed to be at my apartment.”

She made a humming noise. “I see. Well, that didn’t really work out for you, did it?”

I glanced around, hating that I was having this conversation with her standing outside. “No, it didn’t. Can you please let me up so we can talk?”

“I don’t think so. I’m not in the mood to talk.”

“Rose, I have my driver with me. I can sit out here all night, which means I won’t get any sleep and neither will he. Now if you want to play games with me, I will gladly make him stay. If you let me up, I might let him go home for the night.”

“Wow, how did I not see what a manipulative bastard you are?”

She buzzed me in, though. I turned to Darren and nodded. “You can go home.”

“Yes, sir.”

I yanked on the door and headed for the elevator just as a text came through with her apartment number. I hadn’t thought to ask for that. I hit the button for the second floor and took a deep breath. What the fuck was happening with me? Oh, yeah. I was working in a job I hated for a company I didn’t want, and my wife was ignoring me.

She was waiting outside her door when I stepped onto her floor, and she was pissed as hell. “Why did you come here?”

“You know why. Did you think I wouldn’t come after you? I said I would be home at seven.”

“Which you clearly weren’t based on the time.”

“I was running a little late,” I said through clenched teeth.

“I’m sorry, is there a point that I’m supposed to care about your excuses?”

“Rose,” I groaned, pinching the bridge of my nose. “Can we please go inside and discuss this like adults? I already sent my driver home, and I’d prefer not to have this conversation in the hallway.”

Giving a short nod, she stepped inside and shut the door behind me. I glanced around the open space of her apartment. It was nothing like mine. There was warmth in here, colors that were vibrant and gave the place life. There was an understated elegance to the place. I could tell it wasn’t cheap to live here based on not only the address, but also the style of the apartment.

“You have a nice place.”

“Thank you.” I followed her to the living room, shoving the twenty or so throw pillows around so I could sit down. Seriously, who needed all this shit?

“You wanted to talk, so talk,” Rose said, getting down to business.

“Why didn’t you stay at my place?”
