“Hey! Asshole!” I looked up from my desk to see Shane standing outside guarded by Alisha, who wouldn’t let him through. Smirking, I leaned back in my chair and watched as Alisha argued with him about making an appointment first. Deciding to have mercy on him, I stood and walked over to the door, rescuing him from Alisha’s wrath.

“He’s fine, Alisha. You can let him in, but only him.”

“Are you sure? He thinks he doesn’t need an appointment.”

I moved closer, leaning down so only she could hear. “He’s the only one that doesn’t need an appointment, but don’t let him know that. It’ll go to his head.”

She quirked an eyebrow at me. “And what about your wife?”

Shit, I kept forgetting about her. Clearing my throat, I nodded. “Of course, her too.”

“M-hmm,” she gave me a disapproving look. “You know she’s going to leave you, right?”

“I wouldn’t be surprised.” Especially after this morning. She was feisty as hell, but damn, it was hot.

I walked back to my desk, hearing Shane shut the door behind him. “I gotta say, I never thought I’d see the day when you’d be behind a desk.”

“Neither did I, but that’s where we are, so no point in rehashing it.”

He sat down across from me, dressed in casual business attire, unlike me. “So, did you meet the new wife?”

“I did,” I grinned. “And so did you.”

“What’s that?” he asked, cocking his head slightly like he hadn’t heard.

“It’s Rose.”

The stunned look on his face was priceless. “Rose, as in the woman you fell in love with.”

“That would be her.”

“As in the woman you cheated on your wife with.”

“One in the same.”

“As in—”

I stopped him from continuing down this road. “The same woman.”

He leaned back in his chair, resting his elbow on the arm. I watched as he ran his hand along his jaw, considering all that happened down there. He had witnessed a lot of it. “I can’t believe it. This is great,” he said with a laugh.

I held up my hand, showing him my extremely bruised thumb. “Not as great as you would think. She seems to hate me now.”

“What did you do?”

“Why do you assume it’s something I did?” I took offense to that.

“Because she was madly in love with you. If she could have, she would have made sure you stayed on that island with her forever.”

“We both know that was never going to happen.”

“Well, that’s your fault. You signed the contract.”

“It’s done,” I shrugged. “And it all turned out for the best. I still got the woman I love. Now I just have to figure out how to hold onto her.”

“How’d you get the bruise?”
