“No,notthatone,”I say loudly as Hunter screams at the top of his lungs. “I need the red tube. It’s stronger.”

“Red one?” Nick asks, confused. I’m not sure if he’s not processing or doesn’t understand. I mean, we’ve barely slept. I’m surprised either of us can form coherent sentences.

“Yeah. It’s not with the stuff on the dresser. It’s in the bathroom.”

“Right. I’ll grab it.” He disappears again, and I look down at Hunter, who is still screaming.

“I know, baby. But we need the good stuff. Your little tushy is so raw.”

This kid is sensitive to almost everything I eat. I haven’t figured out what bothers him the most yet—surprisingly, it isn’t dairy—but he’s been having diaper blowouts, complete with some serious diaper rash, for two weeks.

“Here,” Nick says, jogging over to me. He rests his elbows on the back of the couch and closes his eyes as I finish changing Hunter, who immediately makes a noshing motion with his mouth. He’s also going through a growth spurt and eating constantly. We haven’t slept in days.

I lean back against the arm of the couch as Hunter latches on.

“Will you make me a grilled cheese?” I ask.

Nick’s head pops up. Did he seriously just fall asleep like that?

“Yep. Grilled cheese. Right. Got it covered.” He leans down and kisses my cheek. “Love you.”

“Love you too. Don’t set the house on fire.”

He laughs through a yawn. “No promises.”

I settle in on the couch, lean my head against the corner, and briefly close my eyes. My mom brain won’t let me fall asleep like this, but at least I can get a few minutes of rest before the next moment of chaos.
