“Fuck, Jack Wilson!”

“You got big, son,” Jack chuckles, slapping a hand on the big guy’s bicep.

“Oi, weren’t you getting scouted by Tottenham?”

The bouncer—Vince, apparently—sighs.

“Yeah, had a real go at it. But I fucked my hamstring up good.”

“Ahh, bad luck, bad luck,” Gus shakes his head.

“Oi, Vince,” Jack gives him a cheeky grin. “That mum of yours still single?”

I half expect Vince to knock his teeth in. Instead, he roars with laughter.

“Fuck me, some things never change, do they?” He chuckles, playfully throwing a fake punch at Jack. “Naw, mate. Sorry to say, someone married her up.”

“Ah, pity, that.”

Vince grins at the two of them, then glances at me.

“You’re with these two geezers?”

I nod. He chuckles.

“Hope you know what you got yourself into.”

“Yeah, she’s with us, Vince,” Gus shrugs. “We were in the neighborhood, and hoping to get a quick pint?”

Vince grins widely.

“Course, lads. Course. Yeah, come on in.”

He’s all smiles as he steps aside, opening the door to the dim, dark pub with a beefy hand.

“Say hi on the way out, yeah?”

“Of course. Good to see you, mate.”

“Hi to your mum for me, yeah?”

Inside, I turn to stare at Gus and Jack. Gus grins, shrugging.

“What?”

“What? What wasthat?”

“Ah, that’s just Vince,” Jack chuckles. “We used to work with his uncle. He’s a good kid. Hell of a rugby player, too. Shame about that leg.”

I swallow as I turn to let my eyes adjust to the low light. My gaze sweeps over the almost deductively dim bar.

“Is he here?” I whisper out of the side of my mouth.

“Dunno, luv,” Gus mutters back as we move to three stools at the bar. “But if he is, trust me, he knows you’re here.”

He turns to order a drink from the bartender when suddenly a heavy hand lands on my shoulder. I gasp, jolting as I whirl to look up at a somewhat terrifying man with a facial scar.

“Mrs. Ransom?” he growls quietly.
